Marshall has overcome plenty . . . SMU can overcome the NCAA and suspensions.

Memorial at Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington to the victims of the 1970 plane crash. On the night of November 14, 1970, a Southern Airways DC-9 aircraft transporting the Marshall University football team crashed just short of the Tri-State Airport in Ceredo, West Virginia, adjacent to Huntington, killing all 75 aboard. Most of the Marshall University football team, coaches, and staff were killed, along with several local supporters after a football game with East Carolina University. The private plane was returning on a rainy and foggy night and flew into the side of a mountain. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the cause of the crash was uncertain. " ... the probable cause of this accident was the descent below Minimum Descent Altitude during a nonprecision approach under adverse operating conditions, without visual contact with the runway environment," [1]

Each year on the anniversary of the crash, those who died are still mourned in a ceremony at Marshall University. A number of the victims of the plane crash are buried in a grave site in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington, and 20th Street, the road that leads from the cemetery to Marshall University, has been renamed Marshall Memorial Boulevard in honor of those killed in the plane crash.

Warner Brothers has created a movie showing Marshall's football program from the 1970 crash to their underdog victory over Xavier University. Titled “We Are Marshall” and starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, the movie depicts the football team rising from the tragedy of the crash. The film is scheduled for release in December 2006. The trailer is available at Yahoo Movies.

thanks for the respect...... Marshall as a university has come through a lot.... if you ever come to Huntington the memorial fountain and the memorial on the side of the stadium are very pretty...... they showed a clip of the movie at our last home game at halftime and its very well done.... i'm not sure there were many dry eyes....

we've gone through a lot of suspensions, etc too.... you'd be surprised how teams will pull together and pull out of situations.... best of luck to your team....

You are welcome . . . we lost a team for several years, but not to a tragedy. It was called the death penalty, but compared to Marshall, it was nothing.
