Other hot seats. These coaches better win in the second half: John Bunting (North Carolina), Dennis Franchione (Texas A&M), Ted Roof (Duke), Larry Coker (Miami), Hal Mumme (New Mexico State), Phil Bennett (SMU), Sylvester Croom (Mississippi State) and Chuck Amato (NC State -- Hey, there's a lot of football left to be played!).

Note that under the NOT HOT section:
Mountain West. MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson suggested his league be given the Big East's automatic BCS spot, but Mountain West teams are struggling mightily. Texas Christian, once a BCS hopeful, has lost consecutive games to BYU and Utah. MWC teams have lost 6 of 11 games against teams from the WAC, and only BYU, Colorado State, TCU and Utah have winning records.

Dennis Frannochio will go well before Bennett does.

I doubt it. He should, but the Teflon coach seems almost bulletproof, doesn't he?

Franchione needs to win at least 8-9 games this year to save his job. With their Big 12 performances lately, I doubt it will happen.

Isn't he making somewhere around $2 million per?
I would think he'd have to win 10-11 games a year, beat UT and win a major bowl every year to even begin justifying that kind of change.

Franchione is half-way there.
Bennett is too.
So I call them neck & neck, once you normalize the apples and soda cans of the similarity.

If SMU cans Bennett they are stupid for doing so. If aTm cans Fanchione, it will probably help their program.

If A&M had canned Jackie Sherrill after mediocre 3rd and 4th years we never would have had to put up with that pompous [deleted]. You simply have to give a coach 4-5 years. You build a program with recruiting not with little pixie dust sprinkled on average talent. I thought A&M was perhaps holding its own lately in recruiting until UT's National Championship which allowed them to pick and choose just about everyone that wanted. I guess the Aggies got one kid UT wanted but that's to be expected.

You forget that aTm has shown no signs of getting better under Franchione. Sorry, it's just not there. Alabama was a failure. aTm is going to be a failure. He needs to move back to smaller programs where he can thrive. He's not cut out for big programs.

The College Coaches Hall of Fanme is filled with Coaches who took 4-5 years to turn the program around. Sherrill, McCartney, Snyder, Majors, Beamer-I could go on and on and on

Ponies win every game for the rest of the year. aTm fires fran, hires Bennett. SMU hires Fran.

Are you still talking about Franchione or PB? I can't tell anymore.
If you're talking about Franchione I see no signs of him turning a program around. Besides, it wasn't in that bad of shape when he came on and in some respects it's worse than with RC.
As far as PB, I'm personally pleased with the team's progression under his watch and am optimistic that the trend will continue for the positive. I think it would be step back for the program to let him go.

The Aggies couldn't care less about SMU. They are a BIG state school who will do whatever it takes to win. If Fran doesn't get it done this year they will bring in a Butch Davis or someone similar. Meanwhile SMU will do as little as humanly possible to continue to tread water. They will fire Bennett if he doesn't make a bowl. They will then bring in a no-name to continue the fine SMU tradition of the last 20 years--medocrity at best.
BTW since Vince "What's a Werlick" left (ie did not graduate) TU they lost at home to Ohio state. So much for big bad TU. Any SMU fan who likes TU does not understand what they did to SMU. Let me put it simply: They orchestrated the DP. Look it up. They were there every step of the way. At the same time they were doing everything SMU was doing. If you don't believe that you dont know anything. Hypocrites.
