OK so JT lil bud's comment the other day about Marshall having a richer football history got me a little sideways.
I know we have five guys in the NFL hof but I wanted to look a little further.
I'll Tell You One Thing by Dan Jenkins (Bless his horned frog heart)
is a great book. I got a lot of this info from there. Anyway, I was looking at our inferior football tradition as noted by JT supporta (because Randy Moss didn't play here). Here goes:
-Counted 31 All-Americans for SMU. 17 consensus all-americans.
Five College Football HOF's
-Doak Walker
-Bobby Wilson "The Corsicana Comet"
-Kyle Rote
-Don Meredith
-Gerald Mann
Two College Football HOF coaches
-Ray Morrison
-Matty Bell
Nat'l Championships (Even by obscure committees)
1935
1981
1982
Other top ten finishes
1926-8
1931-7
1947-2
1948-5
1984-6
9 SWC championships
Nat'l running back award named after Doak Walker
5 NFL HOFers
-Doaker
-Ray Berry
-Forrest Gregg
-Lamar Hunt
-Eric Dickerson
Anybody know how many All-Pro's?
I saw on the Marshall board about some guy saying how far Marshall had fallen that they were worried about "dealth penalty u." We've fallen a lot further buddy.
Regardless, here we are and I'm hoping our guys come out pissed-off and fired up tomorrow! Go Mustangs, Beat Marshall!

There is no doubt that the SMU football program was by far better in our heyday...... and guess what we are finally back on track and i say we start by stomping a mudhole in Marshalls football team......

Yeah, here's how that went.
mustangfan01 wrote:I will go ahead and say Marshall ranks nowhere near SMU in producing football talent in terms of quality and quantity.
Personally, their best talent to come out in the last decade or two had to fall into their lap. Shoulda, coulda, woulda been a Seminole.
Beyond that, the best players the Marshall Thundering Herd have on their team is the refs.
then
J.T.supporta wrote:I HAVE TO DISAGREE on that one. I am just looking at the NFL and Marshall produces some great talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
OK so it wasn't as bad as I made it out to be but still...no comparison.

I know that we have a rich tradition of football dating back to the 1930s and I know that we have 5 fellow players in the NFL HOF. Everytime I am in the Athletic complex, I have a chance to walk down the 2nd floor hallway to see ALL of the gentlemen in the NFL HOF and the College Football HOF. I have a Uncle who still holds the Freshman Single Season Rushing record at SMU and I know that SMU has produced a LOT of talent in the NFL dating back to the 40s and 50s and way into the 80s.
I was not bashing the PAST but saying that in the past decade, SMU has not produced NFL talent or any NFL players beside McCown, who did not finish at SMU. When comparing recent talent at Marshall, they have a future HOFer in Moss, and 2 possible HOFs in Leftwich and Pennington.
I am sorry if anyone felt I was hating on our rich tradition for producing great talent BUT in the last decade we have not made a name for ourselves in the Pro Sports with exception to Quinton Ross, NBA player.

Pennington? Please! I picked him up as a last round pick in fantasy as an uber-sleeper. That guy will not sniff the HOF. Leftwich? Very, very, very doubtful; but I will reserve judgement until he has a few more years sucking.
You have one valid HOF'er, Moss. That is it. Granted SMU ain't cranking them out anymore but to use Pennington and Leftwitch is asinine.

Do we have single graduate who isn't a traitor in the NFL right now? Don't think so. That tells the story. Why do you all the cheerleaders feel they can glorify SMU's past when they don't insist on SMU building a program that can live up to its legacy. (OK jtstang hit it out of the ballpark).

Even the traitor blows. I don't understand how all of these programs with similar records to SMU are putting guys in the pros and we can't get one to stick except for a tackling dummy here and there, sorry Keylon.
It would be nice to point to a guy or two in the pros and say to a recruit, if you come to SMU you can make it to the NFL...that is just not happening.
