I was at the SHSU game. There were far less people at that game than there were at the game today (yesterday now, I guess). Yet the attendance at SHSU was reported as something like 16,000. Today we get 14,032.
Here's my question: do all of those FCA kids in the endzone get counted in attendance? Are those tickets "sold" even if they are given away?
Edit: Oh, by the way, I would have come and met all of you guys but I was too into the game

Nice to see us pull it out.

The difference is there were a bunch of SHSU fans - and maybe 100 marshall fans. We are building our own fan base - it will not happen overnight.
The team now deserves it - lets all start doing our part by talking it up, being loud and staying through the game.

That's not to bad considering that the Rice/UAB game
SUPPOSEDLY had an attendance of 10,153. Some of
Rice's games of last season attracted only 3,000 or
4,000 fans and even that was questionable. With the
exception of only one or two teams C-USA has some
serious issues with attendance.

You people who read the attendance in the newspaper and believe it is accurate are either not attneding the games yourselves or living in a dream world. There may have been less that 10k there yesterday.

No - 14 k sounds about right. You are in a dream world of negativity.
SMU needs more fans and more students at games, but it is a work in progress. Orsini is very proud of the fact that he has increased attendance wherever he has been. Give him some time and some more wins will help.

jt - I know it isn't accurate. I know there are all kinds of tricks (like counting "tickets sold" instead of actual attendance) to bring those numbers up. I do think there were slightly more than 10K there, but not much more. Let's say 12K. It seemed that the SHSU game attracted 8K or so.
My question is whether or not the tickets that were probably given away to those FCA kids count as "tickets sold" or not.
Also, do we get to count visiting bands when they come?

I believe it is the number of tickets received at the gate, plus season tickets. Giveaways count... NCAA has an established process and everyone uses it, so the numbers while perhaps not fully accurate are consistent across the nation

Attendance = attendance.
Sold = sold.
Do you understand the difference?
Yes, 1500 FCA's in attendance count toward our attendance.
I assume they were gimme's, or they were purchased FOR them.
Either way, they spent money on concessions and made our end zone look better.

That's the old rule: walkups plus season tickets sold.
The new rule is BUTTS going through the gates.
They
have to count ticket stubs (now, I'm not saying they don't go ahead and 'give out' 4,000 student tickets so that they can tear the stubs off and count them).

I think we had 16k at SHSU.

Actually I think they amended that new rule, and now for the 15,000 minimum Div-1 requirement they allow you to count tickets sold. So in essense, the NCAA has, in their own unique brand of wisdom, imposed an attendance requirement which does not really require attendance.

Can we give away tickets to random people and say we had "sellouts" every game?

there have been many articles about this issue. Schools can announce attendance in any manner they damn well please. What they report to the NCAA is another matter. Actual Attendance yesterday was approximately 9,500-I may have to adjust my attendance equation to 9,000-12,000 SMU fans + Special Promotions(Homecoming, Parents Week etc.) + Opponent's crowd.
