HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University's latest gridiron defeat left a lot of fans frustrated, and Mark Tabb even said it made him sick.

"With 12 minutes left I thought we had the game won, but somehow (Southern Methodist University) came back," he said. "We just couldn't get it done today."

Tabb is talking about the two interceptions and one fumble that led to the Thundering Herd's 31-21 loss to the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University Saturday. The game was played in front of 14,032 people in Dallas, but it was only a television screen away for local fans choosing to watch the game at home or area restaurants.

Thundering Herd alumnus Marshall Merritt said he believes Saturday's loss symbolizes what Marshall football has become.

"I'm a little disappointed to see how far we have fallen," he said. "I'm not blaming the coaches or saying the talent isn't there, it's just like we're not the same team we used to be. I mean that is (Bernard Morris') third interception of the game and he threw it right to (Southern Methodist). I don't know if they are not running their routes right, I don't know if the quarterback is not there, but somehow, somewhere -- in the talent and the coaching -- something isn't right."

That same frustration was prevalent throughout the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe, but Marshall student Kyle Smith said he prays that the Thundering Herd's season can be turned around.

"It's kind of a heartbreaker to have interceptions at the end," he said. "You knew they would lose at Kansas State and Tennessee, and (West Virginia University) is obviously real good this year, but you thought they would get better once they got to the Conference USA teams. It's kind of disappointing."

Marshall's record now stands at 1-5 overall, with an 0-2 record in Conference USA. In order to achieve a winning season this year, the Herd would have to win all of their final six conference games.

The Thundering Herd's lone win came by way of a 54-31 thumping of Hofstra University in their home opener on Sept. 9.
