Bennett: Sledge, Hasson won't travel to ECU

Head coach Phil Bennett said at his weekly media lunch that WR Zack Sledge and QB/holder Duke Hasson will not make the trip to this weekend's game at East Carolina because of their involvement in an off-campus incident after Saturday's win over Marshall. Bennett was adamant about the fact that Sledge and Hasson "are both good kids" and that they "thought they were helping" the situation, but that they will spend the week practicing with the SMU scout team "and I know they'll do a great job."

Bennett said QB Corey Slater will hold on placekicks, and that a number of different players will signal plays in from the sideline, a duty Hasson normally performs.

Bennett also said redshirt freshman Eric Johnson will get more snaps as the backup quarterback in practice, because Slater has a sore knee.

In addition, he said that DeMyron Martin is questionable for Saturday's game, and that a determination as to whether Martin travels will be made later in the week. He said Justin Rogers probably will play, and that Cory Muse will not.

I hope they remember to tell Willis which player to get the signal from.

Question: How much will this affect our performance Saturday? I know Hasson just gives the signals and holds on kicks, but Sledge has had some big plays this year.

All I know is it's a good thing that Sledge did not go off like he did in Zack Sledge-American Hero, Series 3, issue 6. That would have been good for more than a one-game suspension.

One more thing. Will redshirt freshman Eric Johnson get more snaps as the backup quarterback in practice?

What about Martin? Is he still questionable? Will he travel?

Am I the only one picturing about 15 guys on the sideline, simultaneously flapping their arms, patting their heads, throwing gang signs, etc.?
