4th down

My beef is our failures in crucial 4th downs. 3 weeks in a row we failed in 4th down situations. The failure last week didn't end up costing us the game like the one at UTEP and today's miss, but it could have. The lame call today reminded me of the the call against Marshall - pathetic. They didn't even make the line of scrimmage. My gosh, it makes me wonder.

There is zero imagination on 4th down play calling.

we desperately neede to make it a 3 point game. The ball should have kicked. We've got a kid with a big leg-use it.

Both plays we tried to run outside, our tackles can't seal, and our backs don't have the speed to get around the corner.

You're right man. Last week againt Marshall, that 4th down out of the Pistol was the worst call. A bootleg would have been perfect. And why did we not kick the FG today when we had a 4th down in what I think was their 30 yard line. BS if you ask me.

I agree we should have kicked, but given that we didn't, let's call a play that we have a chance on. The pathetic play is disgraceful.

I wonder if the 45 yard miss caused PB to go for it. Not kicking it was the first mistake. Calling a darn running play was the second mistake.

Field position...why didnt we play for field position???

ONLY PB KNOWS...

Yup, PB shoulda kicked it for 3. Running it on 4th was stupid when one
of our never miss 3 yard passes woulda covered it.

#1 Morstead missed the field goal from 2 yards further in the drive before

#2 We are using a backup holder for field goals this game

#1 + #2 = Go for it

I had no objection to going for it on 4th down. Put the damn ball in your playmaker's hands PLEASE.

I'm sorry, what? He had just missed the same FG minutes earlier????

PROBLEM: Same damn call EVERY 4th down. That's why it does not work...

I really didnt't have a problem with going for it on 4th down. When you look at what was happening. If you could have told Bennet "if you send out the field goal team he will make it", he would have gladly done it, but I think he was thinking that it was far from a sure thing considering we had just had just missed a similar kick and some more time had ticked down in the second half.

I think that whole sequence of play calling was suspect. We get 5 yards on first down, then on second down Willis throws down field into double coverage, a play that has very little chance. We then run it on 3rd down and get 3 yards setting up the decision. We were at a critical point on the field there, right at the far end of field goal range, on 2nd and 5, we needed some positive yards, either a safe pass, or another run.

Burns and Bennet have to realize the limitations of the spread offense, you can't line it up and grind out a couple of yards with a run play on a consistent basis when the defense is looking for it. Do what you do best, have confidence in the offense, 4th and 2, go from the gun, give Justin several targets to chose from in the 5 to 10 yard range and give him a run option....

The play call should have been easy. We have a 4 yard pass to the tight end we complete 100% of the time whenever we need 5 yards. Why not try it when we need 3.

i agree... how about spread out the defense with 5 wide and let just in roll out , pass or run... i like that we went for it since we had just missed a fg, but lets get a little more creative.. and for everyone who is calling for PB's head, if he's going to lose his job he's going to lose it going for it on 4th down, not being conservative and kicking.

No, Stallion is right. Bennett should have kicked it. As opposed to last week , when I disagreed with BrianTinBigD's son and thought the 4th down call was not a bad decision. However, in each case, the play call was a problem.

We were into the wind, Morestead had missed earlier from almost the same spot, Hasson was not there to hold and on the earlier field goal the hold looked sloppy. We couldn't afford to miss another field goal either. We were at the outer edge of our kicker's range. I think most fans at the game were for going for it. I agree a better call would have been to Kennedy. Of course, if we could have stopped that little sideline pass or picked one off, it would have been a different game.
