I am extremely annoyed at everyone always complaining about the DP. I dont mean to offend any of you old guys but i was 1 when it happened, and quite frankly I dont give a [deleted]. If we can't rebuild a program in 22 friggin years we should give up and resign ourselves to getting beat like sorry teams like NORTH TEXAS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Honestly the DP should be a nonfactor. If I hear one more person from SMU complain about how unfair it was I will.....well nothing but it will be awfully annoying....and if we can't stop talking about it how do we ever plan on not hearing ,"Oh you guys back to paying your players again?" from other schools......for the love of everything good in football.... and for the grace of the football GODS please let us never speak of the Death Penalty again......

The death had a huge effect on SMU football, pretty obvious, but the current state of SMUfb is not due to the death penalty. Unless you are talking about the one Pye gave us. His was worse than the NCAA's. Just as everyone thinks the whole student body is greek, drives beamers, and our parents own IBM, people will always nail us as "that team that has to pay their players to win"

Wow, thank you. I never would have known that the DP was a long time ago, or that our football program is bad. I had no idea that people make player-paying jokes about us. It is a good thing you came to post this here, because nobody has ever mentioned this in the history of ponyfans.com!

The fact of the matter is that policies that resulted from the death penalty were still in place until a few years ago (thanks Kenneth Pye), amd I guess a few still are. SMU does not have Physical Ed courses beacuase of him. It has afffected SMU for 20 years and affected how we get players.

The good news is I will get to say to some of the young punks that I saw a top ten rated SMU team that won the SWC and won 10 games twice in my time at SMU. We also were a top ten ranked in Basketball and went to the tournament.

Lastly, it is impolite to curse.

the death penalty is the sole reason why SMU football is just frankly not that good these days. Yea we won 4, but against a D1-AA team, Ark. State, Marshall and Tulane (barely). i think we're so, so close to pulling the program up, but coaching is killing us.
