C-USA Championship Game

Postby BrianTinBigD » Wed Nov 01, 2006 9:25 am

Okay, here is what needs to happen from SMU to have a realistic shot of making the C-USA championship game:
1. Win your 3 remaining games.
2. Hope Houston beats Tulsa this Saturday.
3. Hope UTEP loses again(though this is not necessary).

This would leave a 3 way tie for 1st in our division. So you have to go to the tie-breakers.
So here is the breakdown -
1. Each team has the same CUSA winning pct. so this does not apply.
2. SMU beat Houston and Tulsa so we move on.

Things start to get interesting if UTEP wins out. Then you get a 4 way tie. Houston and Tulsa beat UTEP but they beat SMU. SMU would have beat Houston and Tulsa but lost to UTEP, etc... so head to head goes out the window. Then it gets down to Winning % within the division. Since we would only have 1 loss within our division we would be able to eliminate UTEP and Tulsa. Then we go back to head to head with Houston and move on to the championship game which by the way could be played back in Greenville, NC against the Pirates if they manage to win out.

So all we need is for Houston to beat Tulsa and we win our 3 remaining games and we are in. That was easy, right.

CUSA - Championship Tie Breakers
1. Highest regular season winning percentage based on overall Conference USA play. -
2. If tied, head to head between tied teams.
3. If still tied, highest winning percentage within division.
4. If still tied, compare records against divisional opponents in descending order of finish.
5. If still tied, compare records with common cross-divisional opponents.
6. If still tied, compare records against cross-divisional opponents in descending order of
finish.
7. If still tied, team with highest BCS ranking.
8. If still tied, the representative will be the team that has not participated in the championship
game most recently.
9. If at any point the tie is broken in a multiple team tie, the remaining teams will begin the
process again at #2.

Now this is a thread I can really get in to... How cool is it to be able to scoreboard watch? ... At least for one more week.

Of course, we keep winning and we can scoreboard watch every week.

But seriously, when you loook at last season and say - had a few calls gone are way against Tulsa, we would have played for the conference championship, add to the fact that Bennett keeps saying "there's not a nickles worth of differnece" in the CUSA teams in terms of parity, I'm pumped for the rest of the season.

Gou Houston on Saturday, and go Ponies the rest of the way!

Looks like we are currently driving the bus. Here is what we needed to do:

1. Hope UTEP loses again(though this is not necessary)-THANKS Rice
2. Hope Houston beats Tulsa this Saturday. Cougar High comes through for us.
3. Win our 3 remaining games.
We win out and we win CUSA-West. Also, it looks like a rematch is brewing with East Carolina if we do that. Though Marshall has a shot as well as USM. We can cheer for Marshall next week to pull of the win. Then if we win out we get home field. Think we can sell out Ford for the CUSA Championship game?

Yes, we need to concentrate on winning the next three. We are playing two at home where we have been playing well. Rice on the road. I would like to see our pass defense improved with the couple of extra days practice. A solid win against houston could motivate us even more against tulsa. But now Im just getting ahead of myself. We have six days to speculate what are chances will be. Come November 11th we will find out what we will be doing for Christmas.
