Did anyone else see the feature during the game where Flutie was hitting drop kicks with Morstead. Morstead was hitting them from over 60, it was amazing.

I agree.. I saw that and thought it was great.

Morestead was hitting 65 yarders.. not 60.. and they were clearing the goal post with tons of room.

It's perfectly legal to do that in a game. I wonder why we don't do that as a trick play of sorts.

Love the drop kick! It's a punt, it's a field goal, and god knows if we actually worked on it while not working on the swinging gate we could actually have a great special teams weapon on our hands.

For what? Are we waiting for a special circumstance to use this weapon? Is it going to happen when the swinging gate loses its luster? If so, we should have used it about 8 games ago. Now the entire country, or at least everybody watching that game, knows that our kicker can do that. Not so much of a SECRET weapon anymore.

It doesn't have to be secret to nail a 60 yd FG. The team didn't implement it this year, and dollars to donut holes they will next year. Get off your soapbox. Jeeez.

Just block like it is a punt and then go for the drop kick. Well maybe block the way you really should and then go for the drop kick. Should be an effective weapon on 4th downs between the 35 and 50. You miss and the ball goes to the 20. You make it and you get 3 points. What is there not to love about the drop kick.

I'm not trying to get on a soapbox. I just don't see what we're waiting for. I just would love to see this attempted in a game when we end up 4th and 5 on the 40 yard line...which it seems like we've done that a lot including a couple times in last night's game. Like Brian pointed out, it doesn't seem to hurt trying it if you're going to punt anyways.

I don't think that's right. I think it's just like attempting a field goal.

According to the rule book a Field Goal is any place kick or Drop Kick from scrimmage...thus if morstead was to drop kick from the forty it would be treated like a field goal attempt not a punt

Can you still get a free kick after a fair catch?

I can't find the rule that says yes or no however I thought they amended that so that it can't happen anymore.

Yes.

The drop kick has a tendancy to not get as high as fast as a place kick. So using it can be scary. It also isn't as reliable or accurate.

The perfect time to use a drop kick is on the fair catch at the end of a half or game.

But if it's short.. as long as it's not a free kick.. it can be returned. So can a short FG attempt.
