Huge props to the SMU D

After reviewing the stats the defense was even more impressive than it appeared during the game. After the O and special teams regularly putting UAB in good field position the D did great and save our bacon and this despite a greater than 2-1 margin in time of possesion in the second half.

Here are some of the impressive stats:
- No TDs allowed and only 9 points, less than half our average.
- Total yards allowed 222 vs. 344 average
- 4 of 14 3rd downs or 29% vs. 47% avg
- pass yards per att 3.7 and per completion 7.4 vs 6.8/10.7
- Int for a TD
- typical stellar rush D of 2.6 ypc and 89 total yards rushing
- 9 TFL vs. 7.4
- 3 sacks for 31 yards vs. 2.4/19.2
- 8 pass breakups vs. 3.8, THIS WAS BIG!

The pass D was greatly improved over how they played vs ECU. If this carries over to UH look out! Now it is time for the O and special teams to get their acts together again.

I am sorry but a big reason the pass D looked so much better against UAB had a lot to do with the QB. This guy can't throw the ball downfield. He does not have an accurate arm. He would rather tuck and run than stay in the pocket and try to pass. Ya, the D-Line got a lot of pressure on the QB all night long but things could and would have been a lot different if UAB had an actual QB behind center like we are going to face against UH. I am just hoping the D-Line can cause enough havock to create some turnovers and slow the Coogs down on offense some.

They had us beat on 2-3 deep plays and you're right.. the QB totally misfired. Kolb will kill us.

While UAB is not Houston their QB is not inept. He had the #46 best pass efficiency going in. He suffered because of our pass pressure and improved D.

Perhaps McCann and Hudman made a big difference as well.

One other improvement was in our secondary. We played up on receivers and when passes were caught, our defender was right there. There weren't wide open receivers 15 yards down the field on Tuesday. It appears our D-backs picked it up and did a much better job of coverage.

there were still alot of times when the recievers could easily get 7-10 yards on stips, curls, etc . . . but I agree that that QB was awful! they should and did dare him to beat us and he could not do it . . .Kolb will if we let him!

Kolb is a good qb, but he isn't Roger Staubach. He throws ints, and he hits the turf with his passes a lot. ULaLa (love that name, whoever i stole it from) held him down, we can too.

You are right he does throw INTs- 3 INTs in 296 attempts. Not exactly a lot. Pair that along with 21 TDs, 2,600 yards and a 68% completion percentage playing against one of the worst pass defenses in D1A and you have the looks of an ugly matchup.

Also, against ULaLa, Kolb had a 77% completion percentage, threw for 367 yards, 2 TDs, 0 ints, and a QB rating of 198 (his second highest of any game this season). Hardly seems like they "held him down" to me. The key to the ULaLa win that day was holding the Cougars to 38 yards on 22 rushing attempts or a 1.7 avg. In UH's 3 losses this season they were outrushed 644 yards to 156 yards. That seems to be a pretty telling stat to me.

We beat Houston in their house last year...let's do it again at our Homecoming.

I think a HUGE key next weekend vs Kolb will be to keep our offense on the field. Our team has really lagged behind in ToP. If we run the ball and be consistent with the chains, we will keep their O on the sidelines.

I think Houston has been the team in C-USA most devestated by injuries this season...but they have enough firepower to get by. I honestly think this is our hardest game left on the schedule...but 6 straight wins at home and homecoming to boot, I think it'll be a festive weekend for us come Saturday night.
