I was debating with a fellow SMU graduate what do true SMU fans deem as the national championship team (the 1981 team or the 1982 team)? I say 1982 because were were bowl eligible and won the Cotton Bowl in an ice storm. He says the 1981 team because our only loss was to Texas (9-7) and we were ranked #1 in different polls.
What's the consensus? 1981 or 1982?

I claim both but '82 was a stronger argument.

The only polls that count back then are AP and UPI. So, unfortunately, and I think wrongfully, neither.

Is it really up to us to decide. According to our friends at the NCAA we were National Champs in 1935, 1981 and 1982. Look what happened the last time we challenged the NCAA. That's right, DP. So if they say we won 3 national championships then who are we to thumb or noses at Myles Brand and the PC gestapo.

It's all BS like ice skating with bias, payoffs, etc. till we get playoffs
Tax the hell out of anyone making money through athletics in the
NCAA

I prefer the official NCAA site and not the CBS sportsline wanna be site.

Seriously? I would have thought a former player post DP & SWC breakup would prefer a system that might allow some recognition to teams that are of a "preferred" class.

Ask someone who played on those teams - Craig James was just here, and Lance McIlhenney is on the blvd. before each game.

i just don't believe that a playoff system is good for college football. i could give you a thousand reasons why I dont believe in a playoff... but i have a lot of studying to get done right now...

I like both. But I think 1982 was the stronger claim. We were undefeated and Penn State had one loss. The only reason they won was the Joe Pa pity vote by the pollsters.

I would like to hear some reasoning for this argument. I for one think a playoff system would be great, and can't think of an argument against them.
