Interesting article on the CUSA Board. Of course life is full of 'what ifs' but just consider how everything has played out over the years & where we are now in 2006. Wow! But on the other side, it was a stupid move by Tulane; however, know one really knew the power of television & how it would "control" college football.

...Came across this on wikipedia. It's interesting to think that there could have been a Southern Ivy League Conference;
"In 1963, Tulane, frustated by its inability to compete with Southeastern Conference schools whose academic expectations for football players was lower than Tulane's, considered withdrawing from the SEC and competing with "universities which have similar academic programs and aims." [5]
"At Vanderbilt University, during the tenure of Branscomb the Chancellor tried to establish a rivalry between Vandy and Ivy League schools to foster relationships with other academically orientated colleges and ameliorate the heavy budget costs of the football program. The school followed through with this effort and played a game against Yale in October 1948. However, after Vanderbilt shutout the Bulldogs 35-0 Yale said they no longer wanted to play Vanderbilt. In the late 1950s, the Chancellor called a meeting of the presidents of five other southern private universities -- SMU, Rice, Duke, and Tulane where Branscomb suggested that they try to establish a new sports conference where small, academically inclined private schools could compete. However, the "Southern Ivy League" never got off the ground. Duke did not want to give up its rivalry with the University of North Carolina. And SMU and Rice were not willing to give up their share of the Cotton Bowl profits. [6]"
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

The decision of Tulane to drop out of the SEC ranks among the stupidest decisions ever made by a university in the last 100 years.

Exactly what I was thinking. That would have kept Arkansas in the SWC and probably over to the Big 12 and left Baylor out in the cold. That could have brought about the New SWC or Texas Conference as people have been proposing recently of SMU, TCU, Baylor, Rice, Houston, UTEP, NTSU and adding in maybe Tulsa and Tulane.

I ain't playin' football with a bunch a spare southern football has been's that were part of the Magnolia League. I want to use the SWC name and quit playing teams like Marshall, UAB, Central Florida, and ECU. I could care less about those teams and the only reason I want to hear about Southern Mississippi is if we hire their up and coming coach since our coach left for the NFL. All I want is 9 schools from Texas and our satellite states. So it would be SMU, TCU, Rice, Houston, UTEP, NTSU, Tulsa, Tulane, and either La. Tech, ULaLa, Ark. St., or we could upgrade Texas State to D-1.

i wish you guys would save all this until we are ROUTINELY DOMINATING THE LEAGUE WE ARE IN. OR AT LEAST REGULARLY COMPETING FOR CHAMPTIONSHIPS AND BOWLS. and by the way, we have been playing some close and interesting games recently (uab) with SOME of those teams YOU ARE NOT INTERESTING IN PLAYING.

Look. All I am doing is stating my delusional rantings about bringing back the SWC. I don't care about Bama Lite, ECU(what state is it in again), Disney World University and the Mountaineer's inbred college cousin. We can play them in non-conference games but there is never going to be a bitter rivalry with those guys. Also, I miss the froggies. I am sure that after year 2 of visiting the Lewis and Clark trail out west that they would love to actually play someone in their own time zone(except UTEP) and actually play some natural rivals. Throw in the option of playing schools like Baylor, Duke, Vandy, Wake Forest, most of the Big 12 North, and the remaining dregs of the Sun Belt and we have ability to turn ourselves into the team that Craig James expects us to be.

no kidding, especially seeing that Tulane spent many years thereafter in the academically minded Metro Conference.

Honorable mention awards also go to Georgia Tech for leaving the SEC and South Carolina for leaving the ACC.

You were doing good until you mentioned the Texas State - San Marcos (formerly Southwest Texas State) Bobkitties.
