Can you explain SMU tailgating to a Coog fan? Here at UH tailgating is a pretty simple ordeal...you pull into the parking lot 3 or 4 hours early, pull out your grill and relax till game time.
I was reading on the SMU site about the Boulevard, and it looks like there are a few extra rules: - no charcoal grills except on the Boulevard - fire extinguisher required at every grill (really?) - no drop-offs on the Boulevard (entry only with a parking pass) So here's my question. If I wanted to bring a charcoal grill, an igloo cooler of beer and meat, and some chairs out to tailgate, would I have to go to the Boulevard to use the grill? And am I guessing correctly that if I wanted to get all this stuff to the Boulevard, I have to park elsewhere and carry it overland? We're just trying to figure out whether it's worth the effort or not. This might have to be a non-grilling tailgate if it's that much hassle. That'll really mess with my mojo, though.
Basically, it is hard to tailgate anywhere but the boulevard. Period. There is really no general parking anywhere on campus. So, if you are looking to find a parking lot and fire up your grill, you will be disappointed. It is hard to tailgate with a grill and such on the boulevard without having a designated spot. Long story short, bringing a grill will probably not be worth your trouble.

Probably a lot easier to bring chairs, sandwiches, and your rolling cooler.
A hassle? Oh come on guys.. its not that bad. He could easily park on the west side of campus and he wouldn't have to walk but what.. 50 feet?
west side?.... ![]()
haha.. im talking about when looking at dallas hall from the boulevard. west of the boulevard damnit!

Come tailgate at TCU! ESPN ranks us in the top 10 concerning 'the best tailgating schools in the nation.'
SMU has a good tailgating atmosphere on the Boulevard, too. In fact, it's really cool. ![]() ![]() Go Frogs! Pony Up!
Okey-dokey...for a second I thought you were trying to get him to tailgate on Hillcrest Ave.! ![]() No way. ![]()
Haha.. no.. I meant over behind Mary Hay and Peyton.. No matter what.. the boulevard is centrally located and therefore all the public parking around the center of campus is all close enough to drag your grill from.
Coog won't need a grill. The mustang will make sure your asses are well-done and we'll feed them to you. Pony Up
Here is what I would suggest. You can enter Bishop Boulevard at Mockingbird and head north towards the tailgating area. Now at the purple area on the map below, they will stop you because you do not have a parking pass and have you turn into the church parking lot to turn around. At that point, drop off your grill and cooler and someone to watch it and then head back south to Mockingbird Lane. Cross over Mockingbird and park in the residential area there. If you are early enough, you can find a parking space pretty close to campus and the walk back to where you dropped your stuff off won't be too far. An option is to leave your grill at home and trade some of your beer for some barbeque from some SMU fan who already has some B-B-Q going on his grill. Good way to meet folks and enjoy the atmosphere. After the game, I don't think you will have a problem getting back into the area to pick up your stuff. There is also a Food Court on the Blvd north of Binkley where you can buy something to eat if all else fails. Good Luck.

Yeah but general tailgating is misleading. Theortetically you can just put a tent there or tgrill or whatever, but if it is next to my parking space and a Houston fans sets up there, I am getting him moved. I have seen many a holder of parking spots on Bishop pull that manuever off. The language on the parking pass and the language on the website are not the same thing.
Thanks for all the advice, ya'll.
I think I'm just gonna take the easy way out and leave the grill at home. I'll just have to focus on beer-drinking, I s'pose. ![]() We'll see what this Boulevard thing is all about... Since you say there's not much parking around SMU, what are my best options for parking?
Hey Timmy Chan,
You should just bring some of that good fried chicken from Frenchy's on Scott Street and share with the rest of us on the "Boulevard" As cheap as they sell that chicken at Frenchy's you could take care of a few us easily. Good luck! "Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion" - Rudy T.
