Is this a health issue or a record issue? ... or a combination of both?

If he can coach the last three games of the year, it likely not health related.

I wouldn't mind seeing Dickey or Flanigan replacing Burns.

Burns' play calling can be brutal.

NTSUers seem elated that both Dickey and Flanigan are gone.

This actually surprises me. Wasn't Dickety Sunbelt coach of the year a couple of times? And I'm sure Denton must've considered naming something Darrell Dickey Blvd after the SMU game.

PB says he and Dickey are close. I wouldn't be surprised if Dickey was name a "special consultant" or something like that by PB (assuming he is still here)

NTSU needs to get over themselves. Darrell is a good coach

What kind of employer fires an employee two weeks after they suffered a heart attack.

Cooperstein and Estridge commented on the firing on ESPN radio and were absolutely shocked. They said that Dickey and the AD had a terrible relationship. This was probably why he was fired and they are using the 2-7 record as the reason.

This is a shame -- Coach Dickey is a good coach and a good man. What he has done at North Texas is incredible, considering how hard it must be to recruit players there. What does he have to sell?

DickerJames is absolutely right: to fire him so quickly after a heart attack is absolutely classless. If nothing else, wait until the end of the season.

They should've waited until the end of the season but UNT was 2-9 last year. Despite four conference titles in a row, UNT still couldn't recruit a decent QB and having a lot of trouble now that Booger Kennedy and some of the stud RBs are gone. Cupboard looks bare. It's not a real enticing situation but hopefully an assistant or fallen HC will give it a shot. I believe UNT is upgrading some of their facilities but I doubt they'll be able to pay a new HC much over $200K and the prize for winning the Sun Belt is the N.O. Bowl to play against the fifth or sixth best C-USA team.

It's a better deal than I-AA but the pressure is higher as well. You get the opportunity to schedule big time body bag games like LSU, UT, Alabama, etc. -- that we're all familiar with -- but then you have to have a semblance of confidence left to play your conference schedule.

Did UNT go down hill after their QB died in a car wreck a year or so ago, or was that just a coincidence?

Forget that. He deserved another year or two, considering the four title championships he brought to them. I'm sorry, coach Dickey deserved better than this.

Maybe the UNT administration and UNT fans don't tolerate losing like SMU fans and administration do! Back to back losing seasons and the coach is fired. PB has had quite a string of losing seasons including a winless season and Copeland rewarded him with several contract extensions.
