Band questionI don't mean change the uniforms or any of the spirit songs, but recruit with an eye to advancing diversity on the hilltop and bringing in some music that is more apt to be danced to? Maybe get the strip...i mean pom squad to act as an arm of the band and do their risque little dances for more than just one song at halftime?
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
While I do love our band (they have more spirit than most of the student body), they have not changed in decades . . . I wonder sometimes if it might be time for that change?
maybe not strip club music...but a change Sports, and all that implies.
I don't know about grambling state, but they need a schtick that they can do well. Wearing uniforms and doing a poor rendition of the past is just not going to cut it. Either go all out, or do something that can be done very well.
I wouldn't change a thing. I've been listening to them my whole life and I never get tired of them. I even get excited when I hear Peruna to open the radio broadcasts. Pony Battle Cry, Varsity - also great. Other schools like UT, A&M and Tech don't change what they do. UT has been wearing those orange western suits for decades and I don't hear anyone say "The Cowboy look isn't cool any more, let's wear jumpsuits." I really don't want to end up playing Rock n Roll part II by Gary Glitter. Go Ponies!
Full disclosure: My dad played saxophone in the Mustang band from 1960 to 1962.
Why can't we increase the size of the band? Right now, we compete with Rice as the "Smallest band in the Land." Can't we become 198 guys and 2 dolls.
Class of '91
As I said in my first post, I don't want to change the uniforms of the band or any of the spirit songs. I would just like them to liven up a bit. Were we to change the band at all I would hope they would make it a hybrid of something like Mustang Band in its heyday and Grambling State, i.e. bigger band, more diverse range of music outside of the fight songs, something that might liven up the crowd a bit more and get local kids in the area interested in listening and watching the band, and maybe the football team too. What got me thinking about this was listening to Jackson State blowing everybody out of the stands with their brass section. Yes they are a lot bigger than the Mustang Band, but we used to be able to do that. I would like to see it happen again. The donkey's name is Kiki.

I say no, BUT...
I agree that some updates and changes could be made. I would like to see a little more life to the band. This includes growth. Perhaps to do this, some minor changes wouldn't be bad.
Tulane's is smaller.
I mused about this possibility a couple of years ago. You might notice that it's the Roosevelt High Band/Boosters that often work the concessions as a fundraiser at SMU games at Ford.
One of the many responses to the subject when it was posed before (paraphrased): are you sure you're really pro-SMU? Because if you were, you'd know allllll about the history of the band, and how it has nothing to do with a band like that which you're suggesting... I'm of the opinion that while it doesn't necessarily need to be a Grambling band or Texas Southern band or "Atlanta A&T," but what would be nice would be 200 instead of 75, with 10 or 15 tubas. For now though, it'll be nice to see it get to 100. For those of you that think this is a petty matter as it relates to college football, I invite you to be the visitor at a Georgia game, or be in the concourse at Notre Dame when the band is in the tunnel about to enter the stadium, or (my personal favorite) in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night in Baton Rouge after a first down.
I'll be there tomorrow night. Hoping to have a good time. My first time to a game in BR.
should've told me before the season started...I'd have let you use our tickets. Quite a site, the 'Bama game....talk about a team that travels. I was at the last Bama game in BR, and there were Hummer limos w/ Alabama plates and Roll Tide flags.... Hope you have a good time. My stepdaughter will be over in the student section.
Would have told you but I didn't know until last week. We're going to NOLA and my dad wants to take in the LSU-Bama game. We just finalized the plans last week. Thanks for the offer though. I'm sure it will be a great time. I saw the LSU-Texas Cotton Bowl a few years back and the Tiger fans are very spirited. Looks like a fun group.
