hello smu fans

Postby hugehurricanefanindallas » Wed Nov 15, 2006 9:43 am

hello smu fans. I am ready for a great game saturday. I am a Tulsa fan living here in dallas. I have a few questions. What is the tailgating like at SMU? What are the rules on bringing alcahol on campus? Are there beer tents set up to? I expect a good game on Sat. Of course i expect Tulsa to come up on top but am taking nothing for granted. Here is to a good injury free game on Sat for both teams!

Right back to you. The tailgating is limited. We have something called The Boulevard, which is the middle of the campus "The Mall". You can drink your beer there and bring your friends to that.

By the way, do you remember a student-trainer for the football team by the name of Jennifer Tyde? She was there early-to-mid 90s. She passed away from ovarian cancer a couple of years ago. She was a trainer at Arlington Martin High School.

There are checkpoints all around campus at which you are required to pass a spelling test in order to bring in your drink of choice.

HurricaneFanInDallas,

Here is what the "SMU BLVD" tailgate area looks like.

Since you are in Dallas we hope you will "adopt" Smu
as a team you come see when you can't be at your
Tulsa Hurricane games.

We'd love to see you at a couple of games a year.

The "SMU Blvd" tailgate usually starts hopping about 2 hours before kickoff.

Most SMU tailgaters are generous with food/snacks/drinks.

You can park free at the Dart station over on the NE corner of
Mockingbird & Central and catch a free Dart Bus to and from
the game.

Once on campus just ask anyone you see to point you toward
"The Blvd". (The Blvd is just west of the stadium)

how has the student support been? I was at a TU- SMu baketball game a few years back at moody where there were actually more TU fans in the building than SMU fans. Has the support improved for SMU sports?

Not really. But the jury's still out on men's hoops, now that we have a name coach.

In a word, No.

There was a good crowd for the game last week vs. Houston, but it was Homecoming and everyone was excitied since we had a shot at the Conference Championship game if we would run the table. I expect the crowd to drop off this week.

what do you think the problem has been? I think if SMU started winning the students would show. this was the case with TU football. It has droped off with basketball but is still pretty decent for a lot games. I remeber when TU was winning at basketball there were not enough student tix to go around. Is the only reason for lack of support from students because of lack of winning or is it deeper than that?

Its not just the current lack of winning, its that it has gone on for years. 20+ years without a Bowl game. Last NCAA b-ball tourney appearance was 1993.

It is this level of futility that is killing all support. We basically have lost a generation of SMU fans.

as I die hard TU fan I know whats its like. I remember being at a TU Rice game in 2002 when I attended a the game when there wernt many more than 200 in the stands. But once the team started winning people came back. So things can turn around petty quick

Winning always makes a difference when a large crowd is involved. Just look at the Dallas Mavericks, all the years when they sucked in the 90s Reunion Arena was always halfway packed when the mavs would play. And look at them now, sell out crowds almost every game.

I really think that SMU students just don't give a damn about their team sports. Who would not want a free ticket to a bball or football game???
