CharacterAt last!!! SMU showed character. The Ponies didn't roll over and they didn't give up. They played the second half like the team they should be. Congrats to the players and coaches.
The Defense was fabulous in the second half and the Offense finally put some consistence in their play. Character has been the one ingredient that SMU has lacked for decades but it finally showed through in the second half. Now beat Rice and let’s have some post season fun!
Re: Character
actually, in several games this year our guys haven't rolled over after getting down (utep, ecu, houston) so i think the team character factor has been there all season save ntsu. what concerns me is that we come out flat so often. but the win was great, and we have one helluva QB!
The team doesn't give up. The team has not put away opponents. They did that today. A long fourth quarter drive that eats up clock in the clutch is character. It is one thing to play hard. It is another to play hard and get it right when it counts. That is the character I am referencing.
i totally agree with you. i was just making a side comment about coming out flat, but this clearly is NOT your father's (or older brother's) mustang team.
I don't know that you can say "finally" showed character. All season, the Ponies have fought back -- sometimes it has worked, sometimes it hasn't, but this team is one seriously resilient bunch. The second-half defense was particularly impressive when you consider the fact that Randy Denman and Patrick Handy were in Haywood's spot. They're good players, but Haywood is exceptional most of the time, and they were terrific in his stead.
2 weeks in a row the team get's down early by 14, and 17. Then we
come back to take the lead. Yup, we got CHARACTER ![]() ![]()
these guys were set up to fold for the season after losing to UNT. Give them credit for never giving up. In the recent past, we've witnessed too many blowouts and the way yesterday started, it could have been another. No question these guys don't have any quit in them. Let's just hope they can finish the job at Rice next weekend and give these seniors an opportunity to play in a bowl game
a subtle, but amazing fact about the comeback...usually when a team turns it around in the second half something good happens right out of the lockerroom. not yesterday, smu began its second half with a dismal 3 and out by the offense. not sure how they found the spark to turn that one around, really amazing for smu fans who have watched downtrodden teams for years. not this team. they don't quit.
Absolutely. It really is amazing how this team is so different in that they have the ability to mount a come back. I do think Bennett deserves some credit for that, but moreso the team leaders. I still love the little speech by Bonds in the lockerroom on Halloween.
Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
How great was the QB keeper today up the middle? Got us 10 yds every time and they couldn't stop it. Willis showed great poise today - especially after the 3 and out to start the 2nd half. Martin started to show some of his old self again, let's hope that continues at Rice. My casual SMU fan has been going to games for a while and was pretty excited. It sure beats the days of "handoff to Kincaid left", "handoff to Kincaid right"..
Great win! Does it bug anyone else we go for the 2pt conversion too often and unnecessarily. It's happened way too many times in the PB era.
The big reason that the running game was much better was because we ran a whole lot of 2 TE sets. Now if we coukd throw more to them and not split them into the slot we would be in better shape.
Class of '91
MIGHT have had something to do with stopping them on D that first time...
I would still like to have a lead blocker every once in a while on our run plays...rather than delays, etc.
That sounds about par for you. I would like to see you not show up at rice or N.O.
