There are a lot of "what if" discussions on this board about bowl possibilities, but it is really simple now for SMU: if they beat Rice, they get a bowl bid. If they lose, they don't.
Here's the specifics:
CUSA has 5 bowl tie-ins this year.
Right now there are 6 CUSA teams that are "bowl eligible" with at least 6 wins.
If Marshall and UTEP each win their last game of the season, they would both be "bowl eligible" as well - making for 8 "bowl eligible" CUSA teams.
So then we have to look at who would finish in the top 5 among this bunch of bowl eligible teams. We know Houston is there already with 9 wins. Tulsa is next with 7 wins. Southern Miss may get their 7th win tonight over UAB. (they're up by 10 in the 4th)
ECU could get a 7th win if they beat NC State next week. (which seems likely)
That means that either Rice or SMU would be the 5th and final 7 win team for CUSA.
If for some reason ECU didn't beat NC State, that would put the loser of the Rice/SMU game in the awful position of trying to convine a bowl committee that they should be picked over ECU for a game. ECU has much better attendance than either Rice or SMU. It seems unlikely there's any chance Rice or SMU would beat out ECU for a bowl bid if they had the same record.
There you have it. Now, GO PONIES! Beat the Owls!

The Armed Forces bowl is angling for an SMU-TCU game with their bowl reps at the game today. This guarantees huge local interest for them and let's the metroplex realize that their is another bowl game played besides the now spare Cotton Bowl. Heck, we might even agree to buy a whole lotta tickets to guarantee a spot in this game.

Wait a minute, according to 35straight, we already made the NO Bowl! What happened to all those NO Bowl reps promising a NO Bowl appearance if we make it to 6 wins??? I've been waiting for the announcement on ESPN ever since I got back from the LSU game.

You guys had to struggle to beat Ole Miss. I listened to it WWL 870. Typical Ole Miss collapsing at the end of tight games.
Be careful of #5 for Arkansas next week. He's pretty good.

Barn burner. A bit embarrassing against Ole Miss. But I have to say it was a frickin' exciting game in the 4th Q. Crowd was the loudest I've heard it in Death Valley in a while.

What happened on the PAT that was blocked? Someone blow an assignment in the middle? All I was Jim Hawthorne go bananas that it was blocked.
BTW, Colt David was a great kicker at Grapevine HS up here. You guys should be pretty happy with him.

B/c I don't want to get yelled at for hijacking this thread, I'm going to conclude with this about the LSU game: The TD on 4th and 6 with 10 seconds left was an extreme high. The missed extra point was a 180-degree low just a minute later. CD missed a FG and had a blocked extra point tonight--too low and they got thru the middle. He redeemed himself with the FG in OT. But he needs work. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for LSU and they'll get it together and beat the hell out of Arkansas.

Why don't you go crank up your french horn and dream up a few more 15-letter acronyms, you dork. I didn't start the conversation, I tried to finish it.
