Poinsettia Bowl--possible 6th Bowl?

I just looked at ESPN.com's bowl projections, which havent been updated since Nov. 13. They have UTEP going to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. (Of course, that was b/f the loss to Marshall).
Here's my question based on a hypothet: If the unspeakable happens, and Rice beats us, does anyone think there would still be a chance to get selected to the Poinsettia Bowl? What if we were the ONLY other C-USA team to be bowl eligible after UH, TU, ECU, USM and Rice (i.e, UTEP and Marshall lose.)?

My guess is that there are probably more appetizing at-large teams for the Local Bank Poinsettia Bowl to pick.
However, if they did pick SMU, the media would be busy showing highlights of the Holiday Bowl vs. BYU...
wouldn't that be a great matchup, us vs. BYU in San Diego?

That would be wild. They're talking out here about TCU possibly being in this bowl.
Definitely good for the TV marketing side - I'm sure.
What a matchup between us & THEM

There are already more Pac 10 teams eligible than they have bowl tie ins. I would expect the at large spot to go to a Pac 10 team. There will also be available teams from the Big East and probably the Big 12 that would be more appealing than us.

trust me, you do not want to see smu play byu this year, byu is absolutely solid this year. they have been crushing people left and right, we would have an extremely difficult time with them

I do want to see us play BYU, if it means the Mustangs are in a BOWL GAME!

Currently they are as the MWC champ. However, I believe they still have some games to play.

They've clinched. Only one game left. While it is a pretty good opponent (Utah) they would have to lose at least 2 to lose the MWC title.

Yeah, you're right. For some reason I thought they had 2 games left. That must be the Big East that plays conference games in December.

69 bowl-eligble teams by my count for 64 spots.

It is not possible for us to play in the SAN DIEGO COUNTY CREDIT UNION POINSETTIA BOWL. The Pac 10 having 7, with a chance of 8, teams eligible and only 6 bowl tie ins, the Pac 10 will get the at-large invite. Most likely it will be Arizona or UCLA (if they win 1 more). UTAH will get the other bid from the MWC for this bowl.
For us, its either the N.O. bowl or a quick trip to FW.
Other bowl notes, the Big 12 has 9 teams eligible with 8 bowl tie ins...the Big 10 will have an open bowl slot that will most likely go to the Big East, unless there are 2 Big East teams in the BCS...the MAC will have 3 teams shut out of bowls...Notre Dame will be the worst BCS team this year with a possible 9-4 barring a loss to USC next week
