We're Bowling (for sure)

While watching the SMU highlights from the Tulsa game on smumustangs.com, at the end it says if we win one more game we are bowling (for sure). Has anyone else seen this or does anyone have any other information?

What more do you need to know.. ?

Chances of us bowling at 6-6 is remote.. while 7-5 gets us in for sure.

I assume that the "for sure" part means a bowl has committed to extending us an invitation and we have accepted if we win. Which bowl? Also, there is a possibility of other CUSA teams being eligible for bowls. Have we an invite (assumes we win) despite what ever else happens in CUSA this week?

I was not aware that a 7-5 record guarantees a bowl invitation. I was under the assumption that 7-5 vastly improves our chances but wasn't a guarantee.

If we do not get a bowl invite at 7-5 I, for one, will be super pissed! I know we do not travel well, I know it has been 22 years, I know this is only our 2nd .500 or better season in two decades, but these kids deserve to go if they reach 7-5!! even if it is "just" the New Orleans bowl . . .it is still a BOWL GAME!!!

Here's the deal..

Houston, S. Miss, Tulsa.. all bowl eligible..

ECU, SMU and Rice.. all 6-5..

We have 5 bowl tie-ins.. with New Orleans and Ft. Worth bowl being the the 2 most likely for the 2 bottom CUSA teams.

So.. Rice or SMU will lose.. making one of those teams bowl eligible for sure. ECU will most likely play for CUSA championship.. which means they have 2 games to get to 7 wins.. and they have a nice fan-base.

UTEP and Marshall.. also have shots at bowls.. but have to win out.

So do we have a chance at 6-6 to go bowling.. yes.. but remote. At 7-5 we will for sure go bowling.. either New Orleans or Ft. Worth.

It's really simple:

If we win this week, we become the 4th 7 win team, with ECU the only team able to have 7 wins remaining in the conference.

If we win @ Rice (7-5):

7+ win teams = Tulsa, Houston, Southern Miss, Us

If ECU beats NC State @ NC State, then they will be 7-5 and all bowls are accounted for.

If we lose (6-6), Rice goes 7-5 and is the 4th 7 win team..if ECU beats NC State we are not in the top 5 (5 C-USA bowls) and must hope that another bowl game either invites us or takes one of our conference teams (ACC bowl taking ECU or something).

It boils down to win, and if you dont then pray for ECU to lose @ NC State so that ECU, SMU and probably UTEP finish 6-6...with one bowl spot remaining. That would mean the NO bowl gets to pick one of those 3 and the word is that they want us. Like people have said, I am not sure if the C-USA game would give ECU a shot @ 7 wins...personally, I found it unfair for a team to get 13 to win 7, while everyone else plays 12.

There's the story...win and bowl, lose and pray for ECU loss or lose and pray for a different bowl to appear and take you or someone else.

You didn't mention Southern Miss.

Must have been by implication.

Only 5 team can get to 7 wins. 5 bowls. 7 wins and in.

The unspoken rule on this thread but on other threads is that bowls must choose a 7 win before taking a 6 win team. 8)

Yep. So, this coming Saturday night there will be 4 C-USA teams with at least 7 wins...5 if ECU wins. No matter what, those 4 (or 5) will bowl...if ECU doesn't win, then ECU, Rice/SMU loser and possibly UTEP will have rock-paper-scissors tournament in Amarillo, Tx for the 5th spot.

Hopefully it won't matter, of course (meaning we beat Rice), but I never thought i'd find myself rooting for NCState!

As a Dukie, I can tell you there are a LOT worse groups to root for than NC State. They have comparatively easy-going, knowledgeable fans.

I posted Saturday that I thought that some might overlook the significance of the UTEP loss was that the winner of the Rice/SMU game is guaranteed a bowl game. Otherwise, if UTEP had won there could have been 6 seven win teams and one would would have been left out.

Some might call this crazy talk, but I don't really WANT to go bowling if we only get 6 wins. We need 7 for me to feel like we are coming close to deserving it. 6-6 teams do not deserve bowls. Period. beat rice
