Does anyone have any info on how Garrett performed at the Combine? I know a lot of people did not work out, but some of the DB's like Terrance Newman put up some very nice 40 times. Here's hoping Garrett impressed up there.

We have an interview scheduled with KG after he returns from the combine. Should provide for some very interesting reading. Stay tuned.

For waht it's worth, Gil Brandt is reporting that KG posted the fastest 40-yd. time of any CB at the NFL combine.

2-14-03 CB, Kevin Garrett, SMU is one of the fastest players that will test this season... very quick footwork... smooth back pedal... gets out and turns with receivers... and shows good hands to make the interception... has run sub.4.3 times... with 3.97 short shuttle... 38" vertical and 10'4" long jump...
1-19-03 A little short... got beat by taller receivers this week... failed to show ideal ball instincts... tough, fiesty... puts his nose in against the run... gets turned around on some double moves... has very good catch-up speed...
1-15-03 plays big... very quick... and one of the fastest DB's in the draft...
10-30-02 SMU senior cornerback Kevin Garnett suffered a severely sprained left anterior cruciate ligament against San Jose State... the initial MRI indicated it was not torn... he should be back either before the end of the season... but most likely will rehab and play in at least one post-season all-star game... if this does not snowball into a lingering problem... Garnett is a sleeper guy to soar up the chart in the post-season... thanks to his size/speed/coverage skills potential...
10-10-02 senior cornerback Kevin Garrett recovered a fumble, blocked a field goal, broke up four passes and intercepted two passes along with eight tackles versus Hawaii... he is the best cover corner that you have never heard of 5-foot-10, 195 lbs. and runs legit 4.3's... he is a 4.3 at the Indianapolis Combine away from going in the first 40 picks...

1-19-03 Strength:SpeedTiming
Weakness:SizeVertical leap
Assessment:Garrett will probably be drafted by the 2nd round because next to Terence Newman he should post the fastest pure speed numbers at the combine. The impressive thing about the game of Garrett is his ability to time a play. Always seems to be there at just the right moment to break up a play or cause a turnover. Has very good instincts and intangibles that cannot be taught. Teams will shy away due to his size and the fact that he doesn?t have a tremendous vertical leap. Late 2nd round pick that could surprise and see a fair amount of action as a rookie.

1-18-03 Garrett looked to be the smoothest player in drills and showed the foot speed to mirror any receiver. He lacks the size(5'9", 190), but he's a very fundamentally sound player who looked smooth his in pedal and rotation and also showed good instincts.

10-21-02 SMU?s superfast CB Kevin Garnett suffered a severely sprained left anterior cruciate ligament against San Jose State, but the first MRI indicated it was not torn, so Garnett should be back either before the end of the year or for the Senior Bowl.
10-07-02 SMU CB Kevin Garnett has not played up to expectations thus far this season and his coach, Phil Bennett, has let everyone in the media know it with his comments.

8-20-02 Competes with Kansas State's Terrence Newman to be the fastest cornerback in the draft, and could prove to be the fastest prospect, overall. Consistently times in the 4.30-4.35 range, and has reportedly been timed as low as 4.27. Plays a lot of pure man to man at SMU - both in tight bump and run coverage and off 10 yards. Isn't as physical as you'd like, and will need to get a better jam at the line of scrimmage in the NFL. Has 33 career starts. Has averaged 73 tackles, 2 INTs, and 11 PBUs per season with his career highs in interceptions (3) and PBUs (12) coming in each of the last two seasons. His tackles have dropped each year, not because he has become less aggressive, but because offenses have become more and more hesitant to throw his way. Hasn't been asked to return punts at SMU because of his value on defense, and SMU's proven return star, Chris "Comet" Cunningham, but he shows the agility, quickness, and obviously the speed to potentially help an NFL in this area, as well.

8-9-02 In Kevin Garrett the Mustangs have one of the most underrated corners in the nation. Garrett, a fundamentally sound cover man with the instincts to match is solid in just about every aspect of his game. The only concern we have is his ability to run downfield with speedier receivers. If Phil Bennett brings the K-State defense with him, one that employs eight defenders in the box and relies on man-coverage, Garrett's cover skills will be tested in '02. Should he respond a first day selection could be in the offing.

The same guy who said he's one of the fastest CBs in the nation also said "The only concern we have is his ability to run downfield with speedier receivers..." ?
That's a little strange, if you ask me. With his speed, running with the fastest DBs would be a strength for KG, not a weakness.

I posted this under a different thread, but it is probably more appropriate here:
The Kickoff edition of "The Drugstore List" to which I subscribe rated Kevin 1C-4, meaning 1st round, third level (21st position on in that round), and the 4th best prospect at the cornerback position in the nation. He has dropped in the Preview edition to 2C-6 (second round) after his performance this year. Here is what the authors say about him:
5'9 7/8", 192 lbs, 4.28 forty (fastest of all players in the book of 517 players),
"Great speed, very quick, smooth c.o.c., instinctive, good man coverage, will force the run, lacks height, slowed by knee problem in '02, developing."
Kevin was the only Pony listed in the book.

Was Terrance Newman there? A 4.31 is one of the fastest times KG has ever run...very impressive!

If I'm not mistaken, Terrance Newman was there but chose not to work out, thinking that he could only hurt his draft status.
And I read somewhere other than this board that KG had run one 40 in the high 4.2s - or about as fast as it would take our Burger Guys to cover 100 yards to get to a big cheese-slathered hunk of beef.

that vertical is pretty impressive as well... should make up for his lack of height

And to think that Massey has a 38" VL as well!

From draftbook.com
John Murphy:
2-27-03 Exploded out of the blocks... ran 4.32 on some watches... very quick... likely secured a place among the Top-5 corners in the draft.

According to a source closer to all the goings-on than we are:
Garrett's 4.31 was topped by Terrance Newman's 4.30.
