What about the Wake Forest model?

Postby PonySnob » Sat Nov 25, 2006 11:16 pm

Since no SMU fans want to use the TCU model for athletic success, what about trying to use the Wake Forest model? If it works in the ACC, why not in CUSA? They are a perennial NCAA tournament team and have had quite a bit of success the past few years in football. Wake has a smaller enrollment than SMU and clearly they face much better athletic competition than SMU does.

They receive ACC money and quite a bit from Altria. Best friend went there so I have researched it.

But Wake is the second smallest school enrollment wise in D-1 athletics. Isn't it a better school academically than SMU? Baylor gets plenty of Big 12 money as well, but they haven't been to any bowls, top 25 or even come close to winning their conference.

---Great topic.

Just got home from the Rice debacle & caught the end of WF whupping MD on the road. This little school (6000 under grad) is giving everybody he$$ in the ACC.

Explain how you recruit talent to Winston-Salem NC & not Big "D"?

When you think about it it's really impressive. They have to recruit against UNC, Duke (cupcake), NC State, and even against Clemson and South Carolina. They've done a very good job.

ESPN had a comparison with Wake and Maryland during the game. Undergrad at Wake was just a tad over 4100.

They do it by having a great business school and smaller classes. Something SMU could learn from and I just changed opinons from my first post.

...just got back from the Maryland - Wake game....Wake Forest has been successful this year because they have a great coach and an even better mis-direction scheme...they do more with less talent (kind of like Navy)...if Orsinii is coach shopping I would recommend that he look at both of those coaches.

We can afford Mike Bunting or Chuck Amato. I'd go with Chuck because Bunting couldn't keep a program a float after Mack Brown built it up.

And I would say Wakes success came from very great talent and athletic skill that was overlooked by a lot of schools. When you lose your 1st string QB & RB and still manage to win 10 games is an amazing display of poise, talent, and athleticism. Not to forget, they were led by a Freshman QB by the name of Riley Skinner.

It was also a very weird off year in the ACC. Miami and Florida Stae finish with the same record and combine for 12 loses, something that has never happenend for those teams in their long history of college football.

I'd rather go with the Rugters model. 1-11 four years ago. Bowl eligible for the 1st time last year in over 30+ years. (not for sure about that but it was a long time since they'd went bowling. And now they have a solid Heisman canidate in Ray Rice. From 1-11 to 11-1 (possible) in a span of less than 5 years. Schiano is a master mind in NJ.

Wake is an ACC hoops school. Until this season, no one in Winston-Salem cared about football. Wake's football team is much like air force in the 80s and 90s. They play mistake free football and run a complex misdirection, cut blocking scheme. It has been an awesome season for them, but this year is their best case scenario. I do think SMU could learn some things from Wake - when your players are not as big, fast, and athletic as the opposition, focus on things you can control by playing with more desire, harder, and smarter. I was there yesterday and got the sense that Rice has adopted this approach. No penalties. We held on almost every kickoff and on that last long run by Demyron which ultimately killed us.
