PistolThe game of football was not created to run that garbage formation on the GOALINE. Can we PLEASE ONE TIME just line up a traditional fullback and put DeMyron at tailback and run lead. Just once. It's a simple concept. Our football team is better than yours, so we are gonna push your team out of the way and get this football across the goaline.
I couldn't agree with you more. I hate the pistol more than anything on this team. IT never works. Ever. Get rid of Burns and that God awful formation! To run that successfully, YOU NEED A GOOD OL TO BLOCK. It takes way too long to develop. With have good backs, but we need a jumbo set or an I formation. This is disgraceful for a football team. Great post.
Both Nevada and Memphis have run that formation extensivley this season with Nevada being the major inovator with it last year. Memphis finished 2-10 and Nevada is 8-4. The difference is that Nevada runs it all game long and we only run it in obvious run situations. The Pistol is an offense and not an offensive formation. In fact, it is a rather interesting variation of the Single Wing and I-formation adopted to a more option/pass happy attack rather than a run first mentality.
Class of '91
It is a formation that makes no sense on the one yard line. In this situation, the ball carrier is the furthest of all 22 players on the field from the line of scrimmage/goal line. It just gives the LB and safety more time to penetrate and/or read where the run is going.
The pistol is fine to throw in as a changeup, but as I said in another thread, to run it at the 1 is incredibly stupid. The running back doesn't need to be at the 7 when the line is at the 1, you're just making it harder for yourself.
This will always stick out in my mind when I think about this loss
Lord knows what damage could be done by Demyron in the I formation. A new OC would look like Einstein by just making that one change.
And oh yeah - we would have had at least 8 wins with this schedule if it had been done.
