Mr. Taylor:
How dare SMU and its fans have the audacity to expect results of its footbal coach? I find it amazing that other schools fire winning coaches with regularity but SMU should be ashamed of expecting anything other than mediocrity or worse.
Programs such as Tulsa, UTEP and Rice have executed turn-arounds over one, two and three years, but the Ponies have no right to expect results in five years? The 6 win SMU season of this year included Sam Houston State and Arkansas State (versus TCU and Houston from last year) and is truly a let down versus the five win season of 2005-2006.
How easy it must be to occasionaly check in on SMU and note the "progress", but were you at the Rice game where SMU twice settled for a field goal following 1st and goal at the one? And what is progress judged against? Mike Cavan had a better record at SMU against tougher competition.
"This is a project Bennett deserves to finish" you proclaim. Please qualify that statement. Should Bennett have one or three more years? Five more years? Twenty seven more years? When do SMU fans have the right to demand what other fans take for granted, that coaches be judged based on their results?
I will say that if Orsini wants Bennett to return to the Hilltop, I will trust his judgement and likewise if his feeling is that Bennett should go, then let's find football's version of Matt Dougherty.
Here's to future greatness for football, basketball, soccer and all other collegiate sports at Dallas' only division 1-A football school, Southern Methodist University.
