Darryl Dickey for OC

Postby Alaric » Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:40 pm

Has there been any thoughts regarding Darryl Dickey as a new offensive coordinator? I understand he's a good friend of Phil Bennett...his offense seemed very efficient while at SMU & the offense went downhill fast after he left. Give him a good salary and I'd think he'd come back. I don't think he'd have great prospects for a head coaching job right now.

I'd rather see Ramon F. drawing plays up for Willis.

seriously, the problem is that he stubbornly holds to the running game ala Ken Hatfield. Dickey has lots of friends in the game as his Dad was the former K-State Head Coach in the 70s but few are going to want to run that kind of offense these days. But there never has been an offensive line at SMU improve in one year as much as when Dickey was OC under Cavan. He would know how to pick up a yard at the 1 yard line. In fact, SMU never was successful offensively under Cavan after he left.

I remember hearinf Ramon talk about seeing film of Dickey playing and that he was surprised to see that he played more like a Justin Willis, Ramon Flanigan mold.

From what I recall, sitting Ramon in '97 in favor of Snacks was Cavan's choice not Dickey's.

I wouldn't mind seeing him back. I think he got a raw deal at NTSU.

I would have some minor interest except for the way both Flanigan and Dickey reportedly handled themselves in the past few weeks. Yeah, I think they got a raw deal, but by some reports they became unhinged.

Were there any articles written about there actions? I'd be interested in reading about what they did after the AD made his decision.

Gee, if only there were a blog that mentioned such things. They did go to SMU, after all

But the story I linked to is here:

SMU is going to need an aggressive OC next year, as this offense will be what wins the games. With an already mediocre defense losing key players, the offense will have to turn up the juice, be electric and put points on the board. No more of this conservative playcalling [deleted].
