CongratsIsn't this just wonderful? There is nothing I like more than arguing who has better tailgate's with fans from other schools. Hey, come on, it's not like i can say we have better football - or will have better football anytime soon. Not with this coach -
Phil Bennett may know how to be a good guy and say the right things but he just can't win football games. In fact, after the players have taken leads this year over inferior teams, Phil made sure his coaching strategies would watch those disappear along with our shot at a bowl. What kind of highschool player wants to go to a school where no one cares so he can play in a top notch facility with no fans at the games? Not that many people get excited about SMU Football right now and for good reason. It's a shame we choose to be satisfied with mediocrity. I understand that the students and alumni are apathetic - there is little to be excited about right now. Anyways, i digress. Cheers, Phil Bennett, some idiots just gave you one more chance. Now do something with it, this university has been waiting...
Oh, and Phil Bennett is 17-41 as SMU's head coach. I propse that we make that the new admission standard for athletes appyling to SMU. Just get 17 out of 41 high school credits and you are IN. That means you just have to pass about 30 % of your classes.
Not too bad if winning 30% of your games gets you a contract extention...think about, Gerald Then we could talk recruiting!!!! It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!

Tell me who we get for say 600 thousand to come to SMU. Tell me who has built a team from scratch. Again, I point out that we had a total of 7 players that weighed 270 when Phil got this team. I can bet that some high schools have or had more than that. He could not even have a competitive practice. SMU did not go JUCO and load up with 15 to 20 hired guns. Bennett had to do it the slow way. Now that Copeland is gone maybe we can open up that a little and fill some holes for next year. We are better, faster, larger, more athletic and the team does not QUIT. I think you are a quitter. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
The next time I hear:
I am just going to snap.

Cavan's players went 0-12.
Cavan's players couldn't break .500 Cavan's assistant CHEATED & got NCAA scrutiny AGAIN, as if anybody would have to explain why THAT is F-ed Up. Cavan couldn't hold Bennett's jock in coaching, even if Bennett was let go. Bottom Line: Coach Bennett has another year to keep this ship moving the right way. The team is entirely his team w/ his players and nobody else's. If SMU wants to send him Bon Voyage after next year, that option exists, and SMU can do so with no ifs-buts. He gets one more year, his biggest, to get us to conference championship (ergo also, a bowl). Me personally, I dig the fact that 5 of the 6 times I showed up to home games, we got a win. THAT was a good show even if we had the opposite record on away games. I don't care what coach puts that up. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." PB managed to salvage a season after the huge loss to UNT and the ECU game... give him some credit to keeping this season a float.
I believe that for that amount of cash you can get the following coaches:
This list is not all encompassing and I know a few guys just got new jobs that pay more but this is a decent look at who was out there. Class of '91
Jeez if our standards for "salvaging a season" are to go 6-6 and miss the post season, it's no freaking wonder this program's in such piss-poor shape. Anyway, looks like we're in for more Philball in the foreseeable future.
The team that went 0-12 was a mix of Cavan/Bennett players. Bennett hasn't yet broken .500 either.
I see exactly what firephil is saying. This is a step back for the program. This is admitting to everyone associated with SMU football that losing is ok. Phil Bennett IS for a fact, a loser. He loses nearly 70% of the time. He has a WORSE record than Cavan did. His defense is AWFUL. We get picked on by Rice??
This is a loser move by getting a loser coach to stay on a loser team. Guys, SMU football as it is right now, are a bunch of losers. This was not what I was looking for. Well whatever. I hope Bennett somehow does better next year...after looking at our recruits, I am not too optimistic. And as far as the post earlier that Bennett started from scratch? He didn't. He put us back to scratch in his second year and had to build again. If we want to be a winning team we have to show committment to winning. Bringing back a coach who is a loser, is not showing that committment. Our progress this year at 6-6 is misleading. It was a losing effort. It is lower than our goal, it is lower than our capability. We lost. And we just lost again.
