New uniformsAnyone have some scoop on the new uniforms? The rumor I've heard is that we're going back (thankfully) to the royal blue jerseys, and they may replace a stripe -- possibly a blue stripe, or a red-blue-red triple stripe -- down the center of the helmets. Mustang logo reportedly will remain on each hip.
Anyone know if this is true?
Re: New uniformsI think your on the right track, but I don't even think they know for sure yet, however I could be wrong. I'll put in my two cents, regardless....I think we should bring back the blue horse on the helmet instead of the red. Either way, however, I think we have one of the best helmet designs in college football. It would be sacreligious to put anything other than the running mustang on the helmet. BTW does anyone know when we started putting the horse on the helmet?

Re: New uniformsPlease quit changing a good thing. The blue jerseys are awesome. Add the white helmet and red mustang, and its one of the sharpest uniforms in the country. The red pony with blue trim is easily the most recognizable logo in college sports.
And don't just take my ramblings, on more than one occassion I've heard neutral observers agree - did you catch the comments of the Fox broadcasters during the TCU game? Besides if they change again I'll have to get rid of the helmet on my desk and my computer wallpaper - I don't think I could handle that. "Once the number 3, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Re: New uniformsI say keep the blue jerseys but go back to the red helmets (with the flying white Mustang) we had in Hayden Fry's Days. No stripes on the hat.
Add shoulder rings on the jerseys (white-red-white for the home shirts, blue-red-blue for away), TV numerals on the sleeves and gray pants with a three color stripe down the side (red-white-blue-white-red). Veeery sharp and traditional.
Re: New uniformsI believe the running mustang 1st appeared in 1967 or 1968. In case you didn't know, Lee Iacocca gave permission for SMU to use the Ford Mustang emblem on their helmet.
When looking for a name for Ford's new sports car, Lee went to the SMU vs. Michigan game in Ann Arbor. The game ended in a tie. SMU played with such enthusiasm, it got Lee thinking maybe mustang was the perfect name for his new car. The rest is history. The 1st Mustang off the Ford line was sold to Hayden Fry. By the way, go with the red helmet. If we stay with the white helmet, please put the red surrounded by blue stripe back on.
Re: New uniformsGot to disagree with you, Salt Fork (where is that, by the way?) ...
Gray pants would dull the crisp look of the uniforms, and as we open Ford Stadium, we want to be the sharpest looking team in the country. TV numbers on the shoulders I can give on, but the shoulder rings? No. That would start to give the Ponies an Arena football look. We are above that. Not sure which way I lean on your idea about red helmets with the flying white Mustang. Sounds like it might get a little busy.
Re: New uniformsHow about a silver helmet with a red or blue Mustang?
Re: New uniformsHere are my thoughts. Home uni's need to stay the same way they were last season:
-Blue plain jerseys look awesome (simple is better) -Helmets-awesome-red mustang outlined in blue is nice, no stripes...please -Pants-plain and simple with mustangs -Socks that are blue and white (that cover the whole leg) are professional Away Uni's Need help on this, the ones we had last year are nice, but have no association to the home uni's. Any ideas for always? ------------------ Go Red, Go Blue, Go Mustangs, S M U Go Red, Go Blue, Go Mustangs, S M U
Re: New uniformsCome on, SMU P.F. -- Can't keep the same uni's. The retro-Jets-wannabe look was AWFUL. We looked like an NFL Europe team.
Re: New uniformsRed+Blue Dude: Salt Fork refers to the Salt Fork of the Brazos River which runs up into the northern reaches of Texas in Baylor County where I'm from.
The shoulder hoop or shoulder ring would be like the ones UCLA, the LA Rams, Carolina Panthers wear: over the top of the shoulder pad at the edge right where the sleeve begins. Check out SMU's uniforms from the Meredith era, the Ponies wore jerseys with shoulder hoops then and those togs were sharp. Actually, check out La. Tech's current uniforms, they were based on SMU's design from the late 1950s. If gray pants are too dull, go to blue trousers with white jerseys and white pants with the home blue shirts. I have an old red SMU helmet (with the old grey double bars) from the Fry's days in my office and wish I could see the Ponies outfitted in them again.
Re: New uniformsI am not talking about the jets style uni's, I am talking about the blue ones they wore for the rest of the season. But on the topic of the jets style, I dont think they are that bad. If we do try something different from last year, I hope it is original. I think that going back to an old look is not the answer, NEW STADIUM, NEW STYLE!

Re: New uniformsA topic discussed in 2000
Re: New uniformsRabble-rouser.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: New uniformsCouldn't miss this opportunity. Why don't we just have a couple of retro unis & helmets from perhaps the 60's era & also our historical era - the 30's through the 50's? That'll solve all our problems.
But I agree. Way too many goofy stripes on our current jersey - just toooo busy. Too trendy, too. Just plain 'dark' red or navy with numbers will do it. As for the current white pants - just return to the pants used in the 80's. Our current pant stripes are too small compared to the helmet stripes. This way it's all symmetrica. Would be nice to go back to our school colors b/c they are sharper than the current plain & standard red & blue but I've pretty-well given up on that one. Those '83 CB unis (against Pitt) were really sharp look'n. BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Re: New uniformsI like the red...
I prefer the blue.. I prefer different shade of blue.... I like the stripes... I dont like the stripes... I prefer the white... I like the black... I hate the black.... blah blah blah maybe we should wear a new uni for every game to make everybody happy! of course that would also mean someone is furious at every game! ![]() so what else is new? C-ya @ Milos!
