During this bowl season build up, does anyone know if the 1980 SMU vs. BYU classic will be shown??
For those of you from the Ramon is the best ever, Bordono for President crowd...back in 1980, which was Ron Meyer's 5th. season on the hilltop, SMU squared off against Jim McMahon and BYU in a classic, high scoring Holiday Bowl. Craig James rushed for over 200 yards, McMahon tossed close to 50 passes and BYU scored 27 4th. q points to beat SMU 46-45...some say it is one of the best bowl games EVER.
The 1980 season saw SMU defeat UT in Austin for the first time since 1966, shut out A$M before 41,000+ at Texas Stadium, crush Rice (YES, we used to defeat Rice on a fairly regular basis...) and pound the Hogs to end one of the most successful seasons since 1966.
SMU would go on to win the SWC, that's the Southwest Conference, in 1981 / 1982 / 1984. Long Live T.D. Briggs.

I will never watch that Holiday Bowl again.
Once was enough, thank you.
One 4th quarter BYU TD was big-time questionable as I recall. Don't care to relive the agony.

How about SMU over Pitt and Dan Marino in the Cotton Bowl to cap an undefeated season. That I would like to see. I do not know if I am thawed out yet.

Not as I recall it, it was a ball that came down in the hands of both teams and when the smoke cleared, the BYU guy had it. Tie goes to the runner, or whatever.
The tragedy was, the coverage was great. All the SMU db's (can't recall, Hopkins, Smith?) had to do was knock the ball away and it's SMU game. But they tried for the int and cost the game instead.
Hix is right, though, that game is replayed because it truly was a classic. And it gave a glimpse of things to come in the next couple of years on the Hilltop.

the bad call was on an earlier TE Clay Brown touchdown-probably would have been called back today.

Have any other SMU games been on ESPN classic besides this one? This is the only one I ever see them show.
Would also love to see the Pitt-SMU game but I guess 6-0 games in frigid temperatures is not considered a "classic" outside of SMU fans.

the SMU Texas Game in Austin where Bobby Leach caught the tipped pass has been on on rare occassions.

I have the Cotton Bowl and 1982 SMU-Texas games on VHS. I can watch them anytime.
I popped in the 82 game one day and my 10 year old son could not believe we used to play Texas. And that we used to beat them. Maybe he has been posting on Ponyfans and I did not know it. At least, that sounds like the same type revelation that may strike others who post here.
Who can name the Texas DB that had that ball richochet off his hands? One of the great names in Texas FB history.
Also, Texas had just rallied to tie the score in that game. If ___ had intercepted that ball, the score would have likely went the other way with the ensuing momentum.

I agree. I was there and I think that was the coldest I have ever been in my life. But what a great time to be a Mustang fan!

The Cotton Bowl was not that cold. My girlfriend brought her big purse with 3 bottles of Champaign. Go Mustangs
