SMU has been blessed with talented offensive weapons- names like Walker, Rote, Meredith, Dickerson and James- but it was a quarterback from the 1990s that set the mark for career total yards. Ramon Flanigan was a dual threat quarterback that drove opposing defenses crazy with his ability to escape from trouble and to make something out of nothing. Ramon Flanigan makes the list of the 90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History with his record setting day back in 1997.
At the beginning of the 1997 campaign, Flanigan was 424 yards shy of becoming SMU all-time leader in yardage. On October 11, 1997, SMU traveled to Salt Lake City to take on WAC foe Utah. By using both his arm and legs, Flanigan surpassed Chuck Hixson as the all-time yardage leader in SMU history. At the end of the game, Flanigan had gained 130 total yards (71 rushing, 59 passing) helping guide the Mustangs to a 20-19 victory. It was an extra special day because the win was also the 400th in school history.
Flanigan finished his career at SMU amassing 7,437 career yards. He ranks among the school's career leaders in passing yards (5,640 - 4th), completions (438-4th), pass attempts (829 - 4th), TD passes (30 - 5th), and rushing yards (1,797 - 12th). He also accounted for more touchdowns than any other player, scoring 57 (30 passing, 27rushing). Flanigan's achievements have earned him a spot in our list of the 90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History.
