A bowl ain't what it used to be

Postby mr. pony » Wed Dec 20, 2006 7:50 am

With 32 bowls, this is no longer an accurate yardstick for success.
Sure, going to one would still be better than not going to one, but -

SMU needs to win conference championships and get into the top 25, pronto.

Anybody know how many bowls there were in 1984, when SMU made its last appearance?

Exactly, a bowl is one step, not the goal. Why not 2007?

Expectations need to be high.

Yea, they're more deserving if you do well, not finish 7-5 and go to some [deleted] bowl. Why do they do bowls like the San Diego County Poinsettia Bowl in such a big stadium? There are probably other stadiums they could use. They probably only filled 20% of the stadium, and there was NO atmosphere. Pathetic. Bowls are only exciting if:

-its your team playing
-its a BCS/New Years day bowl
-Lou Holtz IS NOT a commentator for the game. I watched part of the TCU-N. Illinois game on mute because he drives me nuts. How did anyone let him get these positions.

I get a kick out of him. It sounds like they get him drunk before every game and are playing a practical joke on the audience.

To answer your question mr. pony, there were 18 bowl games played in 1984. So the bowl field has nearly doubled since then....but take into consideration that there are 120 D-1A teams now...not for sure how many teams there were in 1984.

He really sucks. He made some ridiculous comment after NIU returned the block punt for a TD, that "if only they had gotten that 1 field goal, they would still be in the game and could win it." Had he watched ANY of that game up to that point?? There was no way Northern Illinois was going to win that game after the first 10 mins...

By the way, anyone else think we would have played a much better game than NIU did last night? They freakin sucked.

No joke :!: When my Dad told me in 63 that we had made the fairly, or
just new Sun Bowl with a 4 - 6 record, I thought that they had just
started a bowl for us.
