Has SMU ever had a head football coach get hired away from the Hilltop or have they all been fired?

Ron Meyer. And have a happy Christmas Snob. Hopefully you will get plenty of new negative polling questions to continue with in the new year.

Did he not go to New England from SMU. If not then you probably make your point. Have a Merry Christmas.

Wasn't trying to make a point about anything. I just did not know if it had every happened as all the coaches I could think of had all left SMU because they had been fired.

[deleted] Davis was the athletic director at that time and hired Ron Meyer in Jan of 76. His first recruiting class was very small since he had such a late start. Darrel Rogers who later coached in the pros almost came but took the job at Michigan State instead.

His first recruiting class included Emanuel Tolbert though!

Hayden Fry was not hired away from SMU. SMU was stupid enough to fire him. After a lot of success at SMU he went on to have a lot of success at North Texas and then at Iowa.

Hayden Fry is on record saying he was fired because some powerful SMU alumni were upset that he was recruiting too many black players. Sad commentary about that time and our region.

That is just not true.

yeah don't believe everything that Hayden Fry says. When he gets on a roll...... He got fired from raised expectations due to success in recruiting great young Black talent-especially Wayne Morris-the No. 1 High School RB in the country from SOC.

Stallion, it wasn't just about raised expectations, he always had an extensive alibi as why we didn't win. I remember watching his TV show after the Texas game inwhich each of their backs ran for 100 yards, and it was so edited that I thought we won the game. The Texas game we got "scrd'd" was another story. One thing I loved about ole Hayden, he never went into a game where he didn't throw everything out on the table. He always found a way to get the ball to a playmaker whether Roderick or Levias. He would never have played that stupid conservative gameplan we had this year against TTech! He would have found a way to get a lead, maybe not win, but keep it exciting even if we lost by 40 points.

He got fired because we lost to Virginia Tech. In those days it was a mortal sin for an SWC team to lose to a school like Virginia Tech. After that loss his job was in jeopardy. Losses to Tech and the Aggies that year didn't help matters. I agree with Stallion after recruiting Morris expectations were raised that we would finally get back a SWC crown. I think in retrospect, had he stayed we would have gotten that crown. The other problem was that SMU had two premier backs, Alvin Maxson and Wayne Morris. Fry used the alternating series method of getting them in. Fans saw schools like Texas running the wishbone and thinking, why can't we have a wishbone offense with both backs? Fry said we didn't need one.

except that Hayden actually did win the SWC in 1966, the Bluebonnet Bowl in 1968 and was fired with a 7-4 record against SWC competition.
