From The Star-Tribune (Minneapolis - St. Paul, MN):

http://www.startribune.com/512/story/931572.html

The University of Minnesota is spending nearly $80,000 with a search firm to find a new head football coach and head men's basketball coach.

Southern Methodist University president R. Gerald Turner is quoted in the article:

R. Gerald Turner, president at Southern Methodist University and co-chair of the Knight Commission, a college athletic watchdog group comprised primarily of current and former college administrators, said search firms have become "almost mandatory" in the hiring process the past five years.

"I think constituents would criticize an athletic director for not getting the biggest sweep possible [if a search firm wasn't used]," Turner said. "It becomes rather parochial if you do the search yourself."

Actually mine shows he posted at 3:01am. Sounds more like late getting in than early getting up.

I hope he is not out showing homes at that hour.

You know why schools are using search firms to find head coaches? Because they used search firms to find athletic directors. And those athletic directors hire the same search firm to find a head coach.

Korn Ferry Intl's Dallas partner was/is William "Bill" Funk.
He was responsible at some length for every administrator hire at Dean level or better for SMU in the 1990s. He did a number of different kinds of searches, but his niche specialty was higher ed. I wonder if ADs are part of that mix, and by extension coaches?

Hmm.

Eastman and Beaudine was used to find Orsini; Orsini used Eastman and Beaudine to find Doherty. At some point there will be another search, anybody want to guess if a search firm would be used and who that firm would be?

Yea i figure those firms will be used if PB tanks this year but Im sure if there are a few big name coaches out there come December and Jan of 08, we might not use a firm.

We won't use a firm. We'll promote his brother, who will hire him back as DC.
