Canadian Schools in the NCAA, eh?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Fri Jan 12, 2007 5:48 am

The University of B.C.'s attempt to become the first Canadian school accepted into the U.S.-based National Collegiate Athletic Association could become reality 12 months from now.

On Monday, at its annual general convention in Orlando, the NCAA's executive committee approved a 10-year pilot program to accept select international schools within its ranks, a decision that comes 20 months after UBC's first inquiry about joining the most prestigious collegiate athletic union in the world.

"It is possible," NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn said Tuesday, "that international membership legislation will be on the floor this time next year."

There is no doubt that UBC is the front-runner as its efforts are primarily responsible for starting the pilot program. Under the mentorship of athletic director Bob Philip, UBC officials travelled to the NCAA's Indianapolis headquarters in May 2005 for meetings, then hosted the NCAA at its Point Grey campus in early December 2005. St. Clair College in Windsor is the only other school known to have interest but theirs is only to play hockey at a Division 2 or 3 level.

They're used to playing with only 3 downs, so maybe they'll be okay. Incidentally, SMU played UBC in basketball about 3 years ago at UBC. I checked it out, it wasn't much of a contest - I think their point guard was 5-7. I do remember us not having uniforms and playing in practice gear.

They are in the NAIA so I don't think it would be the wisest move for them to jump straight to Div 1

Maybe they still do, but I know Simon Fraser at least used to play football...I think they were NAIA too.

They sound like a perfect addition to the WAC. A beatable Pacific time zone school. I suspect the NCAA will make them do five years of growing in 1-AA and/or Division II.

I think UBC is in the CIS, Canadian Interuniversity Sport. They couldn't go right to Div I, they would be absolutely destroyed. Even after years, it would be tough to pull the best recruits in any sport. If you're Magloire would you prefer to play at UBC or Kentucky? Even Jesse Palmer played at Florida.

Can SMU petition to become part of the CIS? I would have to think we'd be competitive. Well, I would hope so at least.

Especially if we still get 4 downs to their 3.

We would be ok. They have to leave the field after 3 plays. So we should score at least half of the time from 4th and 1.

That's not guaranteed. I'm sure we could drop a few passes or shank a few kicks.

Thanks for the research CalallenStang. In Mbasketball, and football, they do play CIS. You are correct that they do flirt with the NAIA in track and such. Thanks again.

Understood. Can you give us a general idea of how CIS compares talent-wise with, say, NCAA Division III?
