The search for Rice U.'s new head football coach is moving quickly. Names 'in the hat' include Randolph (defensive coordinator at Rice), Mark Stoops, Les Koenning, Mike Schultz and Andre Patterson.

Phil Bennett is an Orsini hire. That was made true the week after the Rice game.

update from the Houston Chronicle:

"Rice retained three assistants from the Graham regime: David Beaty (receivers), Todd Dilbeck (offensive line), and Michael Smith (running backs). They will hand-deliver letters from Del Conte to those 19 commitments over the next two days, informing the prospects that their scholarship pledges remain valid."

As it relates to candidates for the coaching job, "As for the ongoing search, Rice officials received more than 200 recommendations, and that list was whittled to 50. According to NCAA officials, Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, and former Rice defensive coordinator Paul Randolph are considered serious candidates. Randolph met with search committee members Sunday.

According to an NCAA official, former Denver Broncos defensive line coach Andre Patterson was contacted by Rice officials. Patterson was fired by the Broncos last week."

I'd be surprised if Rice landed one of those SEC DC's

I'm not now a candidate nor will I accept in the future the Head Coaching Job at Rice. That is the toughest established head coaching job in America not including the Buffalos of the world. They are completely content with living in their own little academic world and in sucking for another 45 years. Todd Graham got the hell out of there as soon as he could for a reason. Football really isn't very important at Rice. The SMU job is a piece of cake in comparison to Rice and Phil Bennett should be judged on that basis considering he couldn't beat the Fiesty Nitebirds.

Be careful. Categorical denials of interest in an HC position like that might lead some to believe Rice will name you as their man tomorrow, given the way things have gone lately in college football.

they could use me on the Rice message board though-but it would drive me insane-talk about living in a fantasy world. I was shocked when Todd Graham actually got them to accept a JUCO player this year. Plus you guys would miss me too much to take over that Rice message board assignment. I don't care what anybody says they got more than their money's worth from Graham as he really woke that place up from the very first hour he arrived. They should ponder what he meant by he didn't feel that they were committed to a strong program. They will lose more money than they would have paid to keep Graham over the life of his contract. Didn't even bother to make any attempt to keep him after Tulsa offered. Unbelievable to me.

What I find funny is that Malzahn was treated the same way at UA. He was brought in to be a token OC and to bring his players that they wanted. He was never given the control he wanted although he said he was in charge. I think they might make a good team.
