What I find amusing while musing is that I personally think that Gus Malzahn is going to someday be a very good Div 1A coach. I think that Rice could have been a good match for him and they could have taken a chance on him for limited money, gotten Mustain, Cleveland and expanded their spread offense. Now I guess that is out of the question for any consideration.
I do realize it would have been a tremendous risk, but at this stage it might have been worth the gamble.

The Rice board says he isn't getting the job. He didn't interview well.
By all accounts, however, he can really coach.

His interview at Rice did not go well. TRANSLATION: He told Rice officials the concessions he would need in order to run a competitive program and they didn't like what he had to say.

How about Ron Meyer? He knows HOW to get a recruit's attention. Just put your card on the school's bulletin board and attach a $100 bill to it. Works every time!

I know he has won in Division II but what makes him qualified to win at Rice?

I think Valdosta State is Championship Division (1-AA). Johnson worked out pretty well for Navy didn't he? Cavan didn't work out for us. That's the risk you take with 1-AA coaches. Some pan out, others don't. I think when you're looking at this type of hire late in the recruiting season, its not the time to go out on a limb. Because, if next year he has a bad year, his tenure is doomed. A coach with some credentials would at least get a chance to right the ship and could have a better chance to hold on to the recruits you've got committed.

Hal was at Valdosta State but Chan was at Troy State and later Samford.
