While we try to talk MM65 off the ledge, here's a hypothetical to ponder.

We go 6 and 6 next year - with a conference record of 6 and 2. We play in the conference championship and win. We go bowling and get squished 42 to 13 by the fourth place team in a BCS conference finishing 7 and 7. Does Bennett live to fish another day or does Orsini cut bait??????????

Very interesting question you pose. Only flaw is conference record includes all games in CUSA, not just West.

So unless we go 0-4 in OOC its almost impossible for us to be 6-6 and still win the West.

My prediction is if Bennett reaches 7 wins then he will keep his job. Anything less then 7 he will be fired.

For 2007, Bowl=job; no bowl=new coach.

And here is the thing. There are six C-USA bowls in 2007 as opposed to five. Fair chance that 6-6 gets a bowl in 2007.

Also by winning the conference championship game we are no longer 6-6, but 7-6. Also, the Liberty Bowl has the option of choosing a different CUSA team. They just have the first choice. So, they might skip us and go down the list. Ultimately with 6 bowls, someone would have to take us this year at 7-6. The scarier thought might be what if we won the west and had a 6-6 record and lost the championship game in quadruple overtime. That would make us 6-7 and bowl ineligible. Would Bennett keep his job then? Unless UH runs away with it, the western division winner could have a 5-3 record in conference. So, it could be very possible that we could be 1-3 OOC and could win the division at 5-3.

I disagree. A bowl alone is not good enough. 6 years is plenty time enough to produce your first winning record and if PB doesn't do that this season- he will be fired.

We'd still be bowl eligible with 6 wins. That's quite a scenario though. Gotta love those quadruple overtime games.

No we wouldn't. You have to be .500 or better.

I'm sorry, I thought 6 wins was the requirement. From Wikipedia:

The term bowl eligible refers to any NCAA football team that is able to play in one of the 32 bowl games. In order to be bowl eligible, a team must have at least six wins, including conference and out-of-conference games, and the team must not be on probation.

I then saw this also on Wikipedia:

On April 26, 2006, the NCAA announced that they were relaxing the rules for eligibility starting with the 2006 season, particularly in light of the new 12 game college football season. Now, teams with .500 records can qualify for bowl games if their conference has a contract with a bowl game. Also, teams with .500 records (e.g. 6-6) could earn bowl bids if all other Division I-A teams with winning records have been taken and postseason spots still remain vacant.[1]

My question is which one supersedes the other? 6 wins or .500 record? Does a conference championship game count on that record? Technically then we'd be bowl eligible before the championship game, but not after it under the .500 scenario. Just wondering what is correct here.

and if PB were to lose all his OOC games, hes getting fired no matter what the record is at the end of the year.

im sure if NTSU beat us again theyd ask if they can swap conferences with us.

It is my understanding that the original 6 win statement was based on an 11 game season. When it went to 12 games the standard became a "winning" season with the exception that a .500 season is ok if teams that have winnig seasons (7 games) would be selected first and then if there were 6 win teams available they could be chosen. A 7 win team always goes ahead of a 6 win as we witnessed this year.

I do not know the definite answer to the conference championship question of a 6-6 team losing and being then 6-7 but I would have to assume based on what I understand that the team would no longer be eligible for a bowl game with a 6-7 record. A losing record is not bowl eligible, nor should they be.
