I think it's kinda like "Eh, whatever" like saying these rumors are stupid (which they are).

Same website has Mustain heading to Navy. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? No. It is reported as rumor (meaning some friend of the OSU coach called a distant relative of Bennett's to see if Bennett might want to hear about the job).

Bennett has put a lot into this program and endured a lot of hard times and pressure situations. He owes it to himself to see if he can accomplish what he set out to do. This is that year.

Oklahoma State Waiting for a Defensive Coordinator
Posted Jan 21st 2007 8:29PM by Brian Grummell
Filed under: Oklahoma State Football, Big 12, NCAA FB Rumors, NCAA FB Coaching

When you're looking to hire gainfully employed college coaches, sometimes you just gotta wait. It's why Alabama was so slow to hire Nick Saban after the Rich Rodriguez flirtation fell apart. Now Oklahoma State's experiencing the same necessary delays.

The Oklahoman is reporting that Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy (he of the hilariously juvenile coiffage to the right) will wait until after signing day to handle that little bit of business.
In fact, three names insiders believe to be the top candidates probably would prefer to wait until after recruiting ends anyway. All three currently have jobs. No need to endanger a year's worth of recruiting at their respective schools.
Those candidates are rumored to be:

San Diego State defensive coordinator Bill Elliot
SMU head coach Phil Bennett
Texas A&M defensive coordinator Gary Darnell
At first glance, Elliot is the only likely hire. Bennett would be leaving a head job (rare!) and Darnell would be making at best a lateral move. It would also signal serious turmoil and instability at Texas A&M if he were to leave for the same position to a school with a lower profile. Meh.

I'm skeptical, but read the entire article to see if you can discern where the Cowboys are going with this. Here's guessing there's a wild card, unnamed candidate out there if Elliot isn't hired.

Sounds like OSU would like a few of our recruits and wants to sew a little bit of uncertainty about Bennett's committment to the program. This is the type of stupid rumor that abounds as you get closer to signing day.

No...OSU is just tired of SMU picking off their head coaches...Dave Smith leaving OSU program to join the more successful Dallas program.

Coach Bennett has forgotten more football than Mike Gundy and the entire OSU staff will ever know.

OSU can have Smith back if they want him! This clown managed to get SMU put on probation for my junior and senior years in 1975 and 1976. No TV and no bowl. He really wrecked the program. Hayden Fry left him with a very good team and he blew it.
