Kate has an very good interview with Forrest, but it is painful to recall:

It took Forrest Gregg twenty years to say "It was a hard time, and I felt like my hands were tied a lot." Why did it take 20 years for the head coach and/or Athletic Director to say this. The seeds of 20 years of mediocrity were sown by the unwillingness of the most prominent leaders of this school to be honest about the restrictions on the program.

He also wasn't very complementary of the NCAA, quote: "It's the worst thing that could ever happen to a football program," Gregg said. "I don't think it will happen again. I'm not a big fan of the NCAA. I don't think they're fair in all their penalties. ...
"I do know this: If they wanted to ruin a football program, that's how to do it."

It had never happened before. Those who dealt with it should not be dealt with so harshly. We're just lucky they didn't decide to sh*tcan the whole thing and be done with it.
I do agree with Gregg about the stinkin' NCAA, though.

I guess Gregg was ranting in private with Pye, Turner and others. It would have been nice to have him go public about those restrictions, years ago. Perhaps it might have led to more meaningful changes during Rossley or Cavan's watch.
