If you have a medical injury that allows you to obtain a medical redshirt, isn't the athlete in question allowed to have another redshirt year also ? Example, the case with Ramon Flannigan when he was here. I remmember he was recruited in 1992 but played his Senior season in 1997, technically his sixth year at SMU. If I remmember correctly he was first injured in 1992 and again in 1995 right ? Does the same rule apply today ?

If a player redshirts a year (for any reason -- injury, waiting his turn in the depth chart, etc.) and then loses a year to an injury, an appeal can be filed with the NCAA in which a sixth year is REQUESTED, but they are not handed out with any uniformity. For every player who is granted a sixth year, there are several more who are turned down. What criteria the NCAA uses, I don't know. Sometimes it seems like there is no such criteria.
