Per the DMN, Tarleton State and former SMU QB Richard Bartel is trying out for the Cowboys. They recently cut Brock Berlin, so he'll be part of the competition for the 3rd string backup job

I would love this so much if Bartel makes it with the Cowboys.

So that is what, 3 QBs who went to SMU who have either played or gotten a cup of coffee in the NFL who transfered due to a lack of playing time? 3 in the last 7 years? That is just sad

Yeah Bartel had four midgets and a dwrf as his wide receiver corps while he was here. Glad he's doing well.

Wasn't he the one that also played intramurals in 2003?

I think our coaching staff has forgotten more about quarterbacks who went on to play in the NFL than some of us will ever know

most nfl teams invite an "arm" to training camp, so the 1st. / 2nd. string guys don't throw theirs out during camp....the same thing Freiburger did in Philly(?) years ago....bartel has a better shot in the indoor league or up north...

From Dallascowboys.com..."strong performance"...

http://dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?id=87 ... 0C3A1DC299

Familiar Story
Former Tarleton State quarterback Richard Bartel is trying to find his way onto the roster with a strong performance at the mini-camp. Bartel and former TCU linebacker Eric Buchanan are joining the team on a tryout basis for the weekend's five practices.

"I know my expectations, but I don't really know the expectations of the organization," Bartel said. "Obviously I'm not going to pick up the whole playbook right now. I just have to be patient and let the other guys get their reps and when I get the opportunity, I get the opportunity."

And the competition at quarterback is pretty stacked at the moment. With Tony Romo taking most of the practice snaps, followed by Brad Johnson, Bartel is really fifth in line behind Matt Baker and rookie free-agent Matt Moore.

Bartel's road to the NFL doorstep may sound familiar to Cowboys fans. Bartel was drafted as a pitcher by the Cincinnati Reds out of high school, and split time as a Reds farmhand and quarterback for the SMU Mustangs. Bartel left SMU after two seasons to pursue baseball fulltime, but gave up baseball after a year and transferred to Tarleton State having never surpassed Class A in the minors.

Recent Cowboys quarterbacks Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson and Drew Henson each played pro baseball before returning to football fulltime.

"I love football, I love everything you put into it," Bartel said. "I spread myself thin doing both really. It's not how I envisioned it when I was 18."

Just to set the record straight, Bartel leaving SMU had nothing to do with playing time (he was the starter) or his talent. He quite simply didn't have his head screwed on straight -- least while he was at SMU.

Hopefully he got his act together, because he was a nice kid; kids do tend to grow up in college, so hopefully that's what happened. Good luck Richard!

Not to mention its difficult throwing being knocked on your rear every down behind a wet paper sack of an offensive line. Ask David Carr.

Besides Don Meredith, has there been a QB who started and finished his college career at SMU and then went to play in the NFL?
