Woodard adds 11 more to first recruiting class
By Phillip Barnhard
— Navarro football coach Ray Woodard announced the addition of 11 players to his 2007 recruiting class Wednesday.
Trying to fill a void on the offensive line, Woodard added three immediate impacts from top-tier NCAA Division I programs. Former Texas lineman J’Marcus Webb and Roy Watts join LSU’s Zhamal Thomas as three players contending for spots on a line that returns one starter — sophomore-to-be Fred Gaines. With Baylor commitments Courtney Green of Corsicana and Anthony Morgan of Lancaster as possible additions to the line pending academic eligibility with the Bears, Woodard said he couldn’t have asked for a better group.
“They’re very special,†the newly-appointed head coach said. “It’s a tough, tough spot to find. No one ever has enough offensive lineman at any level. To be able to add that many quality guys this late is just a huge bonus.â€
Webb (6-8, 300), a sophomore from North Mesquite who played as a true freshman for the Longhorns, was an “academic casualty,†according to Woodard, along with Watts (6-6, 300).
Thomas (6-4, 320) was dismissed from LSU in April after being arrested for counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling after he and another player, who was also dismissed from the team, allegedly broke into a female student’s apartment, according to the Daily Reveille.
Navarro also signed Hebron’s Derke Robinson, a running back who committed to UT but spent his first season at Arizona. Utah State transfer Scott Milligan joins Malcolm Blount of Greenville, N.C. as additions to the defensive line.
Mineola receiver Christopher Tuck (6-5, 200) and Beaumont Central quarterback Brandon Williams (6-4, 215) have commitments with Baylor and Texas A&M, respectively, but are also waiting on test scores to determine their academic eligibility.
On special teams, Navarro added all-purpose kicker Jerry Johnson from Henrietta.
The 11 signees puts Woodard’s first signing class at 43 should all players attend Navarro next season.
“It’s just a good looking list that really complimented what we did on Signing Day,†Woodard said.
