CFB publications and what they think of SMU

I was at a Barnes & Noble today and looked Texas Football, Lindy's, The Sporting News and I think I looked at Athlon's.

All of them predicted us to finish third in CUSA West behind Houston and Tulsa. But they are all projecting us to go to a bowl. The analysis was pretty much the same:

Love the offense behind Willis. They think Sanders can be really dangerous. Looking for Martin to rebound. They were also concerned about defensive line and a steady influence in the secondary without Sturdivant. But they also said we should compete for the West.

Predicted records were 7-5 or 6-6. Obviously, this helps the summer pass until workouts start.

It's nice to have expectations and to be in the conversation for a bowl. But let's do the right thing and live up to them.

Certainly a far cry from them all picking us to finish pretty much dead last 3-5 years ago.

That's pretty much the word on this team anyways. Pretty obvious stuff we've been discussing since the season ended. The offense should be fine, but that D is going to be an issue. Hopefully these 'talented' players step up like everyone says they will.

The season rides on Spetember

PB in September is the story for SMU. The team has to go at least 2-2 in NC, making the UNT game the pivot point for the season record. CUSA should go at least 4-4. 6-6 should be secure, but more is expected. 7-5 will be an improvement, but only 8-4 will turn the cornor.

I really think he needs to win one of the games vs. TCU or Tech. Orsini wants to see him win a game we are not supposed to win. Beating UNT and Ark. St is not enough.

Bennett doesn't need to beat Tech or TCU. He doesn't even need to win seven or eight games. Such talk is laughable. Bennett didn'even need to go to a bowl game last year.

Bowl = Job.
No Bowl = No job.

Bennett told a prospective hire early last spring that he had to win 8 games to keep his job.

Any idea on how many years he has been given to do that in?

Isn't that the 3rd year we've said that?

Second or Third. That just shows that "needing to win eight games" and "needing to beat Tech or TCU" is simply wrong.

Winning eight games would be nice, not that I see it happening.

A win over Tech or TCU would no doubt be nice but SMU has to get to a a bowl this year no matter what. If not, get out Phil. But we also said that last year.

I really think this is Phil's last chance.

And I'm not talking about a Major League Baseball Steve Howe type of last chance.

This is our hill. And these are our beans.
