How does the QB spot shape up now?

Postby Cadillac » Wed Jun 20, 2007 3:23 pm

I figured this could use it's own thread:

Where do we go from here at QB?

I would say try to sneak in Tony Romo except we need a holder for place kicking also.

Watch out for my boy Logan Turner. His father Brad was my high school coach at Lone Oak,TX before he went on to Sulphur Springs and then Springtown. Logan's a good kid who put up some monster numbers during his high school career. I still think he needs a redshirt year and put some weight and muscle on his frame but with the way guys are dropping off the squad he may not be afforded that luxury.
Basically, I'm a badass.

I say sneak in Tony Roma and "beef" up the o-line. Then Willis has less to worry about.

Ok, so we have an established Starter in Willis. Behind him we have:

A True Freshman who's undersized, and a gimpy RS Freshman. Beyond that there are 5 kids who had some sort of QB experience in high school (that I could find anyhow)

Courtney Chase:

Tim Crosby:

Columbus Givens:

Tyler Jones:

James Mapps:

Wow, that's pretty grave if Willis misses any time. Has the School tried faith healing for Zach's shoulder?

At this point I say we run Peruna out there behind center if Justin goes out.

I think Mapps was the emergency guy last year. Most importantly, who is in charge of making sure no one picks on or stalks Justin from now until after the season is over?

Wow I highly doubt Gumbo or Mapps would really be considered to be backup qbs with all that they've done so far in their respective positions but then again, they really do like to assign different positions to people so who knows! Fingers crossed that Crosby can maintain his eligbility after last year's mess. Courtney Chase...we'll see about that I really wouldn't have any high hopes for that, he's not exactly a diamond in the rough there. Tyler Jones seems to be a valid option but I'm not too sure how well he would do in a leadership role, he stays pretty low-key and quiet whenever he can.
I just hope that we can retain our athletes and not see anymore drop out by the 2nd of August.

What happened to Crosby's eligibility?

Nothing right now. Last year he did very poorly and ended up with 9 credits. He just needs to focus on the academic part a little more that's all :)

Jamell Kennedys numbers before G J Kinne went to Gilmer. I watched him play when he was a Junior and QB the kid can play I think he will be a pleasant suprise for this class.

I would imagine that this year we will see a lot of what they call the "wildcat" formation at Arkansas. That is where they put McFadden at shotgun QB and Felix Jones either in the backfield or split and going in motion. We did that some with Mapps at the end of the year but of course right now we do not have a legitimate Heisman candidate handing off or faking to a 1000 yd rusher. But I bet they install it as an option and a fall back should Willis get hurt. Mapps at QB and utilize any of the other RBs depending on speed or power needed. It would especially be helpful if Willis got the wind knocked out of him and needed to sit a couple of plays. It could also rest rest Willis if he got tired. I would only use Logan as a last resort if he actually has the potential believed. He needs a red shirt year.

In the past, a number of posters often questioned why we still recruit QBs every year when we have so many on the roster...now you know. There is an ego involved with that position that doesn't very often lend itself to a back up status.

Bravo!!

But I would also point out until we hear something definite from Phil regarding Rhodes -- and that may not be until whenever the Slater story appears or in August -- that we see how good he is to us.

And for whoever said Rhodes is here with a ? at the end of that sentence? That just makes absolutely no sense. If you have something to share, do it? But if your guessing, you're not helping.

We have any number of TE's who can step in at QB in a pinch.
