I guess I'm not the only one who thinks Texas Tech's mascot bears a striking resemblance to..... Zoro the Gay Blade.
Peruna also made the list:

Last year it was a girl riding the horse. Would that actually add to the masculanity?

I guess it is a matter of perspective. I think the masked rider is one of the coolest mascots in college. It is awesome to see the masked rider gallop across the field. The only other one that can compete is FSU's because he throws the spear down.
Oklahoma State copied the masked rider, and our guns up, and other things we do. I guess they think the masked rider is cool too.

Although the occasional live owl has served as the mascot for Rice's sports teams, the private school's most famous mascot is Sammy the Owl, a replica owl made of canvas that has remained perched in Rice Stadium for nearly 90 years. Their mascot is made of burlap. No wonder they're bad.
This is not completely true. The Mustang Band freshmen "borrowed" Sammy the Owl in 1971, and Sammy made a guest appearance at the annual Pigskin Revue. Therefore, the owl has not been perched in Rice Stadium for 90 years, he took a week's vacation to SMU.
