San Francisco 49ers Special Teams coach Al Everest:
As a two-year starting safety at Southern Methodist University from 1970-71, Everest earned the nickname “Dirty Al,†for his propensity to lay big licks on unsuspecting opponents. It’s a name that has stuck through several coaching stops in a career that spans 35 years.
After finishing up his degree, “Dirty Al†stayed on board at SMU under head coach Hayden Fry and then-defensive coordinator Bum Phillips as a graduate assistant assigned to the freshman team. He then followed Fry to North Texas for another two seasons, again as a G.A. but this time working with the tight ends and defensive backs, all the while working on his master’s degree.
