San Francisco 49ers Special Teams coach Al Everest:

As a two-year starting safety at Southern Methodist University from 1970-71, Everest earned the nickname “Dirty Al,” for his propensity to lay big licks on unsuspecting opponents. It’s a name that has stuck through several coaching stops in a career that spans 35 years.

After finishing up his degree, “Dirty Al” stayed on board at SMU under head coach Hayden Fry and then-defensive coordinator Bum Phillips as a graduate assistant assigned to the freshman team. He then followed Fry to North Texas for another two seasons, again as a G.A. but this time working with the tight ends and defensive backs, all the while working on his master’s degree.

Dirty Al is a dear friend of mine. He did more things dirty off the field than on. Perfect special teams coach. He was known as Dirty Al long before he ever set foot on the field in a game.
