Earl Campbell v. SMU

Reviewing some old DMN's after being away for awhile. The lead story on SportsDay on June 30 is entitled "Toll of Glory" and is about Earl Campbell's rapidly failing health due to his punishing running style. The story continues from page 1C to page 13C where there is a large photo of Earl running over a hapless SMU player who has a very pained look on his face. The SMU player is number 93. I do not know who this is or what year the photo was taken. Anybody?

could be James Wright. I think Campbell graduated in 1975 or 6.

Campbell was a senior during the '77 season.

The way that Campbell ran, you might check number 39 also. He might have knocked the number backwards.

Truer words have never been spoken. Regardless of the jersey on the back, he was one of the best athletes to ever represent the state of Texas.

The SMU player in the photo clearly is wearing number 93. Earl with the ball held high in one hand is powerfully brushing 93 aside with his other arm. There is another SMU player in the photo as well with number 4?. The last number is obscured. The photo came from an AP file but I cannot find it on line. it is probably from 1977, the year Earl won the Heisman. One look at this photo and you understand what a dominant, overpowering runner he was. A man among boys.

There is a photo on a Texas site of Greehey lying on the ground with Campbell running past him. The photo gives the impression that Campbell had run over Greehey but SMU linebacker Putt Chote says that in fact Greehey had slipped and fell.

I saw Earl Campbell as a sophomore run wild over SMU. He was some kind of power runner. Just about any Texas fullback in those days had big days against SMU. Roosevelt Leaks had what 300 yards against us. They double teamed Kelcher and let their fullbacks just run over our linebackers.

The '77 SWC Roster & Record Book lists James Wright as #93, David Hill as #39 and Sid Greehey as #36.
