Morning News stories

There are two stories (sorry - I couldn't find the links) in the Sunday DMN about the possible expansion scenarios, and as a frequent basher of DMN coverage as it relates to SMU, I felt obligated to commend the DMN for its work in today's edition.

The main story, which identifies Miami as the trigger of a potential expansion feeding frnezy, was thorough and very good reading. And it was written by Al Carter, who I've always seen as nothing more than a writer-wannabe who seems to think there are no sports worth discussing outside of College Station. But he did a great job breaking down possible scenarios and their potential ripple-effects.

Rick Alonzo remains a terrific writer, and his story on the future of SMU is well worth reading. The fact that his story didn't make the front page of sports, of course, is not his fault.

If someone who knows more about the internet than I do can provide a link to the stories, I'd recommend all PonyFans read both. Very informative stuff.

Thanks, Charleston! (Oops, I just saw where the PonyFans.com webmasters linked that story on the homepage, too.)

Do you have a link for the other one, about Miami and the other national ramifications of all this?

Fine for Al's story, but did you notice that once again the "down the road" scenario for the Big XII included TCU or UTEP. I know the UTEP thing sounds absurd (I certainly think so), but this is the second time a writer has printed this.

You would think that since this is all speculation anyway, that Al might mention SMU as a candidate over UTEP.

UTEP brings huge home attendance figures. The Sun Bowl is in El Paso.

UTEP would be Baylor High's clone in the Big 12.... a weekly tackling dummy that sells some tickets but never competes.
Imagine the drama when those two teams get together. Vegas wouldn't be able to take bets fast enough.

Interesting - I just read Al Carter's story, and I didn't see one reference to carving R.C. Slocum's face into the side of Mount Rushmore, no mention of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play in the state of Texas (Corey Pullig and Brandon Stewart for those who aren't familiar with Carter's pro-Aggie leanings) and no mention of proposed rule changes to determine a game's winner by counting the number of collies standing on the sideline barking at past-their-prime Cub Scouts (A&M corps guys) who refuse to let go of the distant past. Maybe he realizes finally that the paper that employs him isn't the College Station Morning News?
