Positive Pub For Pony Up!

Postby PonyCat » Wed Aug 01, 2007 1:37 pm

From M.K. Bower's Houston Chronicle Blog:

"Speaking of media guides, SMU wins our award for coolest cover. It is stark white with the red mustang logo and a cutout of a black arrow pointing upward. The meaning? Pony Up, which SMU should this season (we predict a 7-5 finish)."

That’s terrible news. If this marketing campaign picks up, our board will lose all kinds of credibility.

As I said before, "Pony Up" is a good campaign. Or at the very least, it beats what we had before, which is no campaign. Give it a chance.

I still think "pony up" sounds like a request for money--or maybe what we should do to get some blue chip recruits.

I still have hopes for a positive campaign when it is released. I like the simplicity of Pony Up. I visualize a TV ad with "people on the street" looking into the camera and saying "PonyUp". Throw into the mix former SMU alums known in the area (sans banned boosters) and from outside the area, saying Pony Up. You can have Dickerson, James, McIlhenney, Jerry Levias, Chuck Hixson, Laura Bush, Paige Davis, Kathy Bates, Powers Booth, Dandy Don, etc. Super impose lip movement over a snippets of Lamar Hunt, Doak Waker, Kyle Rote, etc. all saying Pony Up. Promote the heck out of being the only D1 team in Dallas. The concept is simple yet I think it can be very effective.

Those of us that witnessed Mustang Mania may have been spoiled, but I will say again, anything is better than what we have done the past 20 years.

mrydel, I can see where you're going with your comments. Auburn was very successful with a similar approach a couple of years ago...."War Eagle" has always been their battle cry, but they showed Auburn fans everywhere greeting each other with a 'War Eagle.'

We've all envisioned and discussed worst case...I guess best case is this becomes our Hook Em or Boomer..... or Gig Em or Woof Woof Woof (far and away the worst. Ever been at a Georgia game at kickoff time?)

When you see the tv commercials and hear the radio ads, you will be pleased. They should be coming out here pretty soon. The tv ads will be shown after the 10:30 pm sports on all three major networks.......sorry, that is all i have.......................

The parts to the puzzle seem to be pointing to some positive publicity from this as more becomes clear.

HEY!

For what it's worth, I've seen little Pony Up stickers in some car windows, and yesterday I saw two people in Pony Up t-shirts at the gym.

Yes, I went to the gym. Shut up.
